I didn't know you could do that. I've always static timed mine, so who knows what the timing is at full advance. I've got the spring loaded weights on my advancer although I did put new springs in it some time ago as recommended.

You can use a diesel pulse adapter hooked to a timing light & monitor the advance. Not as nice as the cat tool but it works. Pin the flywheel & set up a pointer on the front for a tdc reference

    Update:

Had the truck checked out by two different shops including a CAT dealer. Timing is supposedly spot on, injectors are good and the fuel pump is healthy.

The CAT dealer is telling us the fuel pump is mismatched for our engine and there is nothing they can do because the engine has no serial #'s. They also said the increase in smoke is likely due to the cold weather. My opinion is that they can't plug in and have the computer tell them what's wrong.

I've heard thru the grapevine there is a CAT guru in Penn Yan, NY that is the be all to end all for these old mechanicals. Curious if anybody here has heard of the guy and has his info.

If they can't tell you the right pump without the engine serial number, how do they know it is the wrong pump on it now?

Technically there is no wring pump, you could have the wrong nozzles for you pistons, but even a B pump will still operate properly with a C nozzle.

I say run it. Pull some oil samples after a while. Watch the pyro and fuel mileage for anything out of the ordinary.

We've been running it every day. DOT has already warned us on it. We were tying to fix it before they saw it but we just weren't fast enough. It clears up going down the road but it's at idle that it is smoking. Changing the oil this week or next so we will sample out the oil.

Pyro #'s are all pretty normal and the fuel mileage has been consistent.
