I have a 1992 EXHD 379 equipped with a 3406C model Cat. The question I have is that, if anyone has ever or knows of anyone who has ever repowered an older truck like this with an updated electronic engine. I would appreciate any information or complications associated with such a conversion. With the federal mandates on EOBRs looming over our future and since they only work on engines that are ECM driven, rebuilding the old CAT would likely be wasted money. I am a man that loves my old pete and do not consider her to be a throw away. Thanks for any input

Not sure with Cat, but I know Detroit offers a Repower kit to put a series 60 in anything, best to call cat and see what they say about a Repower. Maybe able to go get a whole harness from a Pete and replace yours, not sure what would be easiest.

I'd rather have the mechanical engine...feds can suck it with their EOBR mandate. You didn't have to install seatbelts in your old trucks when the feds mandated seat belts in trucks. You didn't have to retrofit your old trucks with auto slacks when that mandate took effect, either. Outside of Calif***ya, you don't have to put the emissions crap on your older truck engine either. In other words, plenty of precedent exists for "grandfathering" of older equipment...whether compatible with a new mandate or not. I would personally hold off on repowering with an "EOBR-compatible" electronic engine until the actual mandate is published...and then the courts are involved (because lets face it, lawsuits WILL be filed). Hell, the current EOBR's that are in use cannot be legally mandated due to the ability of a carrier to use them to harass a driver, so until EOBR manufacturers come up with a solution to that (and the other issues not addressed by the court), the FMCSA won't be able to mandate anything.

In other words, you've got time. EOBR manufacturers have to come up with devices which meet the specifications necessary to be "legal". Then the FMCSA has to issue the mandate. Then lawsuits will be filed, and the mandate might be thrown out. A large number of people running older trucks not compatible with the mandated EOBR's could be another lawsuit against the mandate if they don't have some form of exemption, as it would be prohibitively expensive for those truck owners to comply. Until the ENTIRE process has played out, I wouldn't worry about it. If anything, I'd be looking into ways to avoid having to put one of those wretched big-brother boxes in my truck....NOT making it easier for them to watch my every move.

Thanks for the input. Ive heard some say that its no big deal but in my opinion, a whole new wiring harness would be. Maybe im just a little overwhelmed because its not something that I wanna do but then again, throwing away a good truck isnt either.

Good answer truck driver!!!....Its a good possibility that Im looking to far into the future on this thing. Its just one of those things that no one knows what to do. Alot of things have happened that I never thought i would see. Its a tough industry and becoming tougher on the few of us independents left. Its obvious more than ever that a sustainable future comes with keeping an ear to the ground. I was considering leasing to Landstar but as of Aug this year, all new lease trucks have to equipped with an EOBR. I do appreciate your answer and everything you say makes perfect sense. Its not one of those things that Im looking to do ASAP but never the less seriously looking into and gathering info in weighing options

CA keeps pushing the compliance date back. Most owners are not rushing to upgrade unless they need a new truck.
