Thanks for the reply - nope, definitely a series 60. Yes, it has DPF but no DEF.

If you can capture a code. Give the manual that contains a stack of codes for your specific engine. Then inform mechanic the trouble code and have him fix the root cause of the shutdown. WHatever it may be.

If mechanic gives you smoke and flak, find another mechanic. Repeat until you find the trouble and fix it.

This is the one thing I hate to the bottom of my heart with the cursed computers, leak a little bit of coolant then it throws a code and shut down it's ######## to jam a clip into the sensor and nurse it another 100 miles.

GRAPEAPE, Thanks for all the great info.

the guys who came up with the number three make me laugh. sometimes i have upward of six faults

i was just looking for general info for when this all happens again, but thanks! it just irritates me that with my truck it’s always been ONE thing shutting the truck down at a specific date and time, and with all the computer crap no one has any idea which thing shut it down

yeah funny you should mention this...this has been a problem for me. it seems like there are a number of things that can go wrong to create too little or too much pressure in various places that can cause either fuel to burn too hot or not enough fuel burning and too much air which makes other things burn hot and blah blah blah - thanks for the comment

Thanks for the help. Yeah i was totally surprised by the number of mechanics who don’t wanna listen to any info I have that might help them fix the problem. I saw a bumper sticker on a tool cabinet - “I don’t tell you how to do your job, don’t tell me how to do mine!!” I needed a starter once, and there was a mechanic in Louisiana who flat-out refused to put one on because he didn’t think the starter was my problem. I kept telling him - “LOOK, I’m paying you to put on a new starter whether I need one or not, so what’s the problem?? You make money either way.” Finally he replaced my starter, and sure enough it fixed the problem i had, and then of course he suddenly acted like our whole “gimme a new starter” discussion never even took place.

I burnt a alternator at the GA FLA Truckstop 76 at 2 am on a frigging sat. Figured monday was a bust and was preparing to be fired. This 18 year old mechanic replaced it with me eyeballing him over the shoulder in a hour.

I wanted to adopt him as a son. Whoever he was.
