First I've heard of this, but seems like a darn good idea.

Nevada requires the full physical sent to the DMV or it will suspend the license.

That's part of the new federal mandate on tying CDLs and med cards... Nevada is ahead of the general curve on this one...

Thanks for the input and like many have stated on here it is a joke of sorts. I know when I go into the truck stop I see blank medicals and know what they are used for.

PSanderson: you are correct as usual.
Mike Md: Thanks for the info.

I'm also hearing more and more buzz with the sleep apnea and cpap's. My father has sleep apnea and has to sleep with the machine and like some of the poster's said, he's said the same himself. The best sleep he's gotten in years, well rested.

To the poster that doubts with computers no one while falsyify anything? Hey news flash, that's how they make counterfeit CDL's. Yes, take someone like you, takes your personal info (name, DOB, address, license number etc) and puts their picture on a fake license with your information and then pass themselves off as you when stopped. I see this alot. With the development of the computer, the technology of scanners and digital pictures, makes it real easy to counterfeit a number of things.

Hello,as far as med cards go is it true that the gov has created a guideline for height/weight ratio?I don't think it's fair if it is true.Just because a person is a little heavy does not mean that they healthy!!I would rather be a little over and look healthy than skinny and sickly looking. Not everyone has the bone structure frame to be a twiggy beanpole.I would like feedback on this subject if there is anyone wants to comment.

For the most part, unless you can get the rules changed, you will have to live by them.

No system in the world is perfect, by the body mass index is correct for 85% of the population. Those that are outside bell curve they use will have to get tested.

The biggest issue I see with that "bell curve". It's moved twice since it was created.

The BMI > 30 requirement for sleep apnea testing has MAJOR problems. There are much better ways to screen for sleep apnea that will not require an expensive ( about $ 2,000) test when its not needed. Also BMI alone will miss about 20% of the drivers that have sleep apnea from one study.

The biggest issue I have is that the research done on truck drivers (not the general driving public) does not show CMV operators with sleep apnea have a higher risk of crash. (PM me and I will send you the citations - literature review)

The sleep doctors want lots of new patients.

Given that the chairperson of the FMCSA medical review board that made the BMI guidliine is a former Director of the National Sleep Foundation (really a trade association for sleep doctors).. and has served on the board of a major CPAP manufacturer... some conflict of interest comes to mind.

Also... the CPAP manufacturer ResMed has said publiciy that they have been lobbying for these new regulations to increase their sales to the transportation industry...

Check out some of the Land Line magazine articles on the topic.
