That's a massive amount. Even 1mg is too much. I think the recommended dosage is something like 0.3 mg.
Iirc large doses could lead to insensitivity and further sleep problems. -

Apparently the human body produces between 0.1mg and 0.9mg naturally per day. -
I was taking Melatonin for a year or so, to help give more consistent sleep. Usually falling asleep was not the issue, but staying asleep for more than a couple hours was. After a year or so, I started having very vivid dreams, and then the worst part; I started having the irrational fear I would not wake up in the morning. Weaned off it, now I go to bed when I’m tired, and sleep until I wake up.

Everybody has a different circadian rhythm but the world is built around one. ADHD tends to lend itself to longer cycles which leads to less restful sleep which leads to further difficulty with attention and hyperactivity. It's important to sleep the sleep your body needs.

Melatonin supplements give me nightmares. My preference for getting to sleep is Diphenhydramine, I use it if I need to kick my rear into nightshift mode. After a day or two of night shift I'll stop any sleeping aid medication. And I hardly do coffee...I had 750mL one night in 2024...never again.
