I take zyprexa for schizophrenia. is it possible for me to become a truck driver? I am very stable on my meds right now I just need to stay on them is all and I live a normal life. Do i have a shot to become a truck driver?

i should call DOT and ask them to see what they say.

Truck drivers have to pass a DOT medical exam. On the exam it asks all kinds of questions including mental illnesses. I'm sure it's a grey area on a case by case basis. There are people that are turned down and go through the appeal process with the DOT Medical Review Board. Many get passed with a waiver.

What does your psychiatrist say? It would seem to me his opinion would weigh heavy.

Other than that, go get a physical and see what they say. Or maybe call and ask. Physical cost vary greatly. Usually walk-in clinics are around $40. Maybe do a google search on "Cleveland OH DOT Physical" to find a clinic?

Its kinda insane to even ponder this if you are mentally handicapped. If you ever for whatever reason stop taking your meds...I could go on here but I think the point is made.

Thanks for the replys guys. I am collecting disability right now for the illness but I would not say I have chronic mental illness. It takes me a long time to have a relapse and get paranoid and stuff. I would say if i stopped my meds it would take me 8 month to have an "episode" or whatever. I am going to get tested and see what happens.
