Excuse me, I am Mexican, I have lived in Canada since 1997. I have been in the trucking industry for 13 years. I want to tell you, for those of you who may not know, that in Mexico there are schools that teach drivers to be professional drivers just like in Canada and in the US. But, like all countries, there are transport companies that will hire you without asking for references of their drivers because these companies could care a less about the safety of their drivers—they only care about the bottom dollar (or how much $ they can earn off of you). But this can happen in any country. The last time that I traveled to Mexico by highway, I only found new trucks of the latest model. I was surprised. I have also known that the Mexican trucks that enter the US or Canada are new models because not even one multi-million dollar company will want to pay for breakdowns for their trucks in a country that will charge them 10 times as much to fix as in their own country. The best advice that I would give to you if you go to Mexico or South America is that you be very careful not to break any laws because they will first stick you in jail and then later investigate. Mexican jails are terrible. But if you travel to any of the touristic areas, you should be very safe and treated like a guest. Never try to get drugs or get mixed up with illegal businesses because that is when the big problems begin. I have heard of a lot of foreigners who go to Mexico “on vacation” but in truth they go to get drugs to bring back to their countries. When you cannot reach an agreement and you are arguing and they result in physical damage that is when the news reporters state that vacation travelers are murdered by Mexican bandits when in truth these persons went to Mexico with the intent of doing business with the drug lords. Just FYI for those of you who are reading this board and would like another point of view. Take care, H

I have a friend who is a retired Canadian truck driver and he has been living in his 5th wheel rv in a rv park just outside Acapulco for 2 years now. The only trouble he's had has been from common thieves and that sort of thing can happen anywhere. I was very surprised to find out that they have all of the same major retailers that we do also like Walmart, Costco etc.
