The Union Pacific RR is partnering with FerroMex RR to haul containers out of this new port. They plan to use as few drivers as possible and hopefully Mexicans. They want to get rid of as many longshoreman and American drivers as possible. UP will have a double track from CA to El Paso by 2010 and on to DFW later. They are planning on guaranteeing the same transit time as OTR truckers in the next 10 years. This comes from UP hiring fellow I know . They have started a 2nd intermodal facility in Dallas. We already have a big BNSF intermodal place in FTW. They are taking direct aim at the OTR industry. That's why JB Hunt, WesternEX, UPS, Schneider, and a lot of the others are getting in bed with them. They see the handwriting on the wall and want to be players.

Well with the world's finances in a pickle, maybe that port won't be built. L.A./Long Beach Ports can still handle the capacity when things get back to normal.

You know folks, the ports on the West Coast are fast reaching capacity and imports and export continue to rise at a rate of better than 4% per year.

The new deep water ports in Mexico will not effect union jobs in the US in the least. That is only union protectionist talk.

The plans call for rail lines mainly to bring the containers from Mexican ports into the US. Same security at the Mexican ports as we have here.

And if the destination for Customs inspection and distribution is Kansas City or the new mega terminal being built in the Dallas area, so what! There is no security risk.

Kinda hard to tamper with a moving train.

I have studied this quite a bit for a major port terminal company that is part of one of the bidders.
    .
Think of Punta Colonet as a "3rd Southern California port" (along with LA and LB). It will have 99% rail-only access to Yuma and then UP's to-be-doubletracked line to El Paso. At El Paso, UP's tracks go 1) NE to KC-Chicago; 2) NNE to FTW-DAL-Shreve (and on to Atlanta); and 3) East to SanAnt and Houston. Good stuff, considering BNSF has 65% of the long-haul market to/from SoCal.
    .
Punta Colonet "may" affect some truck movements to/from Tucson and/or El Paso as those moves are too short for the current rail carriers to serve profitably given their tight capacities.

I don't know what you have been smoking but messing with a train is incredibly easy. They stop on the average of every 30 miles to allow trains going in opposite direction to pass. They are at present staffed with a 2 man crew who are up to 1 1/2 miles away from other end of train. And the RR's are planning 1 man crews in the future. Containers in this area are being broken into all the time sitting at sidings waiting to proceed with crews on board. And with the fine Mexican authorities looking them over before they head this way there is a huge need for concern. How many hundreds of murders have you had in the last month? the US has no business placing any security in the hands of the totally inept Mexican security forces.

The state of California deserves what it is getting. Its citizens have constantly proven their ignorance of the old axiom, "There is no such thing as a free lunch.". :yes2557:
