    I think it depends on the individual. I have a friend who drives for Wal-Mart, has been there 8 years, when I told him where I have driven in the last year, he told me he's never been South of NC or West of Ohio. Does he know more than me? Perhaps and perhaps not. Also, some people are good teachers and some aren't.

    Fortunately, it's Conway's decision who trains, and not ours.

    Where you have been physically makes no difference. I've seen guys who have never left the Dallas or Chicago area who were excellent instructors since you're learning to operate the equipment. Driving down the interstate from 1 state to another is the easy part.

    There's a reason why most people used to learn from old timers who were family, or friends of the family, OR basically work as an apprentice for an o/o. Those were people who knew what they were doing better than just a year and some miles under them.

    I won't hijack the thread anymore than this, but I will say this job is more than just driving down the interstate. Taking a full box over Donner or Cabbage or pick your hill I don't care, is a lot different than traveling in just the NE or around Dallas. Then there's time management, Qualcomm, customer quirks and expectations, hints for living on the road, etc...

    As for myself, I also have a large horse trailer and 25' deckover, have driven farm equipment and 6 wheelers too. Could I train with a year and do a good job? I think so, but that's just me. We all know there's a whole lot more to it and I don't care who the trainer is......you can't teach anyone all there is to know in 4 weeks.

    If you have the choice between Fright and otr that's pretty much a no brainer. Take Freight 11 out of 10 times man. It can be frustrating sometimes but knowing what I now know, that's a really easy choice.

    Slight hijack:

    They are mountain passes. Well, Cabbage is "just" a downhill into Pendleton, OR off of Emigrant Hill, and Donner is a pass into California.
    They are both really fun in the snow.

    Cabbage - my first trip down it was in a logging truck with my Dad in about 1969, before it was as nice as all this.
