It would be foolish to be an owner-op without being a company driver for at least a year or two. Imagine a friend inviting you for lunch and just after you place your order he says "you know what, I'm buying this restaurant right now." You don't know what you are walking into and the industry has a ton of sharks looking for people exactly like you, in a hurry. They have years of experience giving the right words to people that ask the same few questions. Learn the industry and the job then decide if risking lots of money makes sense.

Thanks for all the great unsolicited advice. I do understand your intentions are noble but I am not your cookie cutter case. I have been self employed since I was 22, I am now 40. After the Army I have about 1.5 years of working a "job". I am not your typical 9 to 5, 5 days a week person. I literally would never make it, alarm clocks? What are those? I have worked from home for 18 years and have a pretty automated system that requires very minimal hours of my actual time. Between me and my wife we have 4 businesses that each allow us to use our time how we wish. I am exploring this avenue as an additional income stream because I am usually up late and have been bored and I could use my time more wisely. The O/O avenue allows me to have control of my time and experience. Finally after 18 years I feel like I need to get out of my house. I have an educational background in business and sales and am very familiar with risk as I have traded the markets for 7 years. I am wanting to drive a few days a week, maybe a couple trips out for 2 days. The freedom and adventure of O/O is the only reason I am considering a CDL.

I have gathered enough data that I feel confident I can handle the overhead and profit even in this down market to make it worth my while. I am familiar with market trends, up and downs, and I am looking to buy some of that blood on the truck market. I may even expand in the future and offer some opportunity to friends who have beat their bodies down in the skilled trade industry when the market rebounds and manufacturing starts returning to the US here in the near future.

I think I found a school with an acceptable program so I will close this thread but I am sure you will see me around as I have a few more questions that are more suitable for other forum categories.
