For those of you who surf the web without virus and trojan protection, count yourself as warned.

A not so new piece of scare-ware aka malware has been repackaged and placed in key locations...Facebook, MySpace, and others. It's VERY official looking.

Touting itself as a free or a 30 day trial Microsoft protection upgrade/update. The name is in the header of this thread.

It buries itself deep within your system, requiring manual removal or a reformatting of your HD.

Others state that Malwarebytes will remove it. While others claim it (MB) won't even detect it. I dunno. I know McAffee won't even acknowledge it's on your PC.

It will run periodic automatic scans, and pop up a screen requesting that you purchase the product after it supposedly detects several trojans, key loggers, and viruses (fake ones it installed). Even though it claimed to be free when you downloaded it.

There is NO uninstall for this "product". You are held hostage while it works it's magic in the background, every time you turn your PC on.

If you've got it....get it removed as soon as feasible.

    Baack Thanks this.

This is probably the same one that has been going around for several years. They just repackaged it a little and changed the name. It used the microsoft's security center logo.

It is...they've just repackaged it. Very well too, I might add.

It looks like genuine MicroSoft when extracting.

Windows just stinks. I'm pure linux now, and never going back. It's just too much of a hassle to run windows. Viruses. Trojans. Spyware. Malware. Bleck! I got XP installed in a virtual machine where it can't do any harm, IF I ever need windows...but so far, in the last two months since I switched to linux, I've yet to use it. Most of my windows programs run nicely with WINE or I find a native linux alternative that does the same thing.
