I understand some of what you are getting at, but people like my mom could get away with just the lowest Windows software, email and web. My dad may need a bit more as he plays some minor games like Civ.

On the other hand I always buy the top of the line as I play high end games, make my own website, photoshop, burn DVDs, editing video once I have a digicam is in the works. I still need to upgrade my Peachtree software. Now I use 2 hard drives as C drives one for my gaming and one for my productivity software, love swappable drives.

Now if they are designed for and optimized for which they are designed, I'm all for a software that will do what I want. If they didn't optimize them correctly then I'll be pissed. I still use XP as I'm still pissed that they changed what Vista was suppost to have, stupid focus groups.
