Microsoft to open own stores, take on Apple

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp announced plans Thursday to open its own chain of branded stores as it looks to catch up with rival Apple Inc's successful move into retailing.
The world's largest software company, which also makes the Xbox video game console and the Zune digital music player, did not say how many stores it was looking to open, or when, or which of its products would be on sale.
That is to be decided by David Porter, a former DreamWorks Animation executive, which Microsoft named as its new vice president of retail stores.
Turner, a former Wal-Mart Stores Inc manager, will report to Microsoft chief operating officer Kevin Turner.

Wow, sounds like a whole slew of terrible new jobs for disillusioned MCSE's. Yeah THAT was money well spent back in the day. You TOO can be an ENGINEER in just 12 weeks!

at first i thought great now microsoft is at it again...but i realized that its a good way for microsoft to go bankrupt and then maybe they will listen to the consumers.

This is just poor economics, they are laying people off, yet they want to open retail chain ?

It may be telling that when Apple decided to get into retail stores, it hired the vice president of merchandising from Target to run them. Why do Apple stores look so much like Gap stores? Could it be Steve Jobs' time served on the Gap corporate board?

So, when I read that Microsoft is getting back--yes, they used to have a store in San Francisco--into the retail business, I can't help but notice they hired someone with 25-years' experience at Wal-Mart.

I can see it now, "Microsoft! Always low prices!" I will avoid the urge to take more potshots toward Redmond and just remind Microsoft that before Apple even thought of retail stores, I told Microsoft to open a bunch of their own. They were probably wise to not take my advice, but the store I had in mind would be very much like what Apple eventually opened.
