1 of the few times I have ever seen a loaded cow truck put OOS was in Texas. No log......I know the guy he is the model of polite. It was a random to boot, wouldn’t even escort the driver to a barn to off load em. Said they are your problem you knew better. That’s true however most times they will let us get empty though they are not required too nor can they be held liable if they do not.

Some more lack of experience showing the DOT in Texas are ruthless for lack of a better word. Just because they haven’t introduced themselves does not mean they wont

Years ago when the new southbound coop was finished southbound of St. George, Utah I was headed to LA and had some time to kill, so I volunteered for an inspection. Far better to get a fresh sticker prior to entering California.

Nice older inspector does a thorough job, points out a small soot trail coming from an exhaust clamp, suggests I loosen the clamp and roll up some tin foil, put it in the seam where the clamp comes together, and tighten it back up.

Then he takes a look at my log book. He studies it for a bit and then says "you use a calculator to fill out your logs, don't you?) I began to reply and he said "I can't even come down Provo that fast in my patrol car ".

He warned me about my logs, shook my hand, put a new sticker on the windshield, and bid me farewell. I always seemed to get along with the older officers.

Lol. Been like this with every truck I've ever owned in the past 25 years. Every little wierd sound or gauge reading a hair off of usual. The challenge is real

Thats right. The logs set them off. A lot of them guys don’t sweat something like a burnt light, low tire, or torn flap because they can’t prove that it didn’t happen 5 mins ago. But logs they can.

Just the fact he knew about the old school tin foil trick tells you something.

I don't. I like the convenience, but hate the hassle all at the same time. Paper allowed a buffer of a few minutes, as you logged in 15 minute increments. E-logs don't and will tell on you for going one second over. I just noticed the range he gave wasn't matching his given reasoning, rather the e-log mandate reasoning.
Yup. Its not to see what you logged when fueling as much as to see where you should have been mathematically when fueling. If your logs say you pulled out of El Paso at 6 am off your 10 and you are in Fort Worth at 1 pm, eyebrows might raise a little, then they move on. But if they ask for your fuel receipt and see you filled your tanks in El Paso at 8 am, where were you actually located at 6, and how fast were you going to get to Fort Worth by 1 pm? Or if you have a fuel receipt prior to that from Phoenix at midnight... where did you break and when, again? Its the easiest way to slip up on logging that will get someone caught every time.

Indeed. The coops are closed because they are out where you don't expect to see them with portables in the back of the Tahoe.

Seems like ELOGS when they were a new thing, got a pass by DOT. Now it’s Paper that gets a pass. Last few times, they barely looked at my Log book, if at all. They’ve questioned the Truck being an 01. My Truck comes up as a 2000 in Freightliners system. Sales were so bad back then, so many repos available, new Sales were very low. The original Owner only paid $89k, he got an excellent deal. It was the last of 5 identical Trucks on a promotional front row display at Neely Cobb in Nashville. Took a long time to sell them. I’ve met 2 of the other Owners. Both are in almost like new condition. Much nicer than mine. I’d like to buy both of them. Ones in Alabama, never seen snow, only runs in summer. The others in TN, the old guy barely runs it these days, always been hand washed. Paint and graphics look like new on both Trucks. Restoring any vehicle is possible, nothing beats a nice clean original vehicle. Hard to find.
