Looking at buying a 2009 Volvo day cab that came from Interstate. It has the D13 with a Eaton 10 speed and 380K miles.
Is this a good engine??
I'm in Southern California so it's a CARB approved truck.
It's set at 405HP and 1450 TK right now but can be turned up to 485HP and 1650TK.
here's a pic
Couple more...
My concerns are people telling me to stay away from the Volvo engine.
might buy a 2009 Volvo w/ D13...need input

Thanks rookie trucker. Kinda new here lol. Hoping to get some feedback as I'm supposed to **** or get off the pot come Monday on buying this truck.

Look at the service history, if it's a problematic truck it only gets worse!
If its not go for it, all engines have good and bad aspects to them. More so for engines manufactured between 2007 and 2009, this is when they had to first conform to really strict emmisions laws, especially in CA. Engines built in 2010 and up run the scr but are way more reliable. Oh and 2007 engine = 2008 truck, 2010 engine = 2011 truck and so on. I actually ordered a new Volvo D13 500 with IShift gearbox. What ever you do stay away from the D16 Volvo engine! -

D13 is not easy to work on too. Rear located timing gears, sometimes you have to drop tranny, remove cab hatch to work on it.
Volvo says that less noise in cabovers, but I cant say it.
I-shift is the expencive toy too.
DEF may be the real nightmare for non skilled mechanics.
Look for truck with pre 07 ISX123456 Thanks this. -
ouh, you are in Cali... DEF is only solution)
-
it would be funny if CARB says soon that DEF is poison, and we need other trucks

Ya, in Cali.
Just noticed truck has 2.79 ratio. Combined with 10 speed manual tranny is this truck going to be a turd on the hills?
Never really seen a truck with 2.79's. Any ideas on how this truck will or won't pull?
Thanks, OB -
This truck has DPF from the factory so it makes me legal till 2023. Can't really afford a new SCR technology truck right now.
