So if they just pay company drivers by mileage it's around $0.54 cpm? Avg. Miles from Port Arthur Tx is 285 miles to San Antonio, tx for 26% of $590 isn't bad.

Make sure you put them on the spot and verify.
    Are they paying hub miles?
More than likely they are paying postal miles. IE Draw 2 circles about 3 inches diameter on each circle. Put a line between those two circles about 4 inches long. Now lets say the circles are 3 miles in diameter and the 4 inch line represents 4 miles. At most with postal miles there is only 7 miles distance.
Yet on hub miles you might have to bypass a river and have to drive 40 miles to get to the same distance.

Postal miles they can screw you.

Is the percentage based on what the customer actually pays or what Halvor tells you they paid?.

That's my issue with percentage pay. Unless each customer is going to tell me what they are paying to ship that load I have no way of knowing if what my company tells me they received is accurate or not.

Update - Home from orientation. I talked with the flatbed manager and he would not recommend anything except to say some drivers have recently switched back to miles due to the low rates and slow economy. I also spoke to my trainer (we are starting OTR training Sunday), he is paid on miles by choice and swears he is making more than the percentage guys at Halvor. There must be more to the story but I have a hunch mileage pay may be better at this company - at least for now.
Also verified: mileage pay is Rand McNally mileage. Percentage of linehaul pay is gross rate minus FSC only.
