Hi every one, I just joined when I found this site on google. I would like nothing more than to be a trucker, I have had many famialy members in the buisness and I have even been on a few trips during summer vacation when I was in school. I have a problem and Iam hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I have just completed my Army training in July and Iam now a National Guard soldier, Iam now working a construction laborer job now as I could not find a welding job (which Iam certified by the military).
Anyhow, Iam 18 years old right now and yes I know most carriers wont even touch me until I hit 21 or 24. Well I wanted to see if anyone knows anything about a company that will put me in a truck, it can be a straight truck, tractor-trailer, etc. I refuse to take no for a answer and I know it can be done. I live in the Des Moines Iowa area and anyone could help me out let me know please.

You can get a CDL when your 18 but you can't drive out of state.
you might want to look at something local till you turn 21. -
-
well there is local work in most area's of the country.
you could start out maybe with a construction company driving a dump truck. I know it's not a big truck but you could learn a few basic skill's while getting a pay check.
as for getting someone to pay for your CDL school that might be a little tough until you turn 21.
but you would be much better off to get it yourself anyway so you don't owe the company anything. -
It is very hard to be in the reserves and truck. I did it for a long time. You will end up missing drills and have to make them up. I had 4 years active and 16 in the reserves and guard. When I went to retire I went back OTR. I found out when I was on the road; supposely I had a bad year back in the 80's and needed a couple more points for retirement. I was something like 3 days from having 20 years in to retire. I had deployed twice and had really been in 24 years, but 4 of that was in the IRR (inactive ready reserve) and I had a 1 year break in service where I got out all together when my daughter was born. While on the road they called me and said I would need to re-up for 1 more year to retire. I was so ticked off I fought it, but said to heck with you and never went back. I would have ended up missing more drills being stuck out on the road somewhere and would have had to do 10 more years just trying to get 1 good year in. -

get your licence yourself by getting the state manual, studing the heck out of it and passing the paper tests, get your physical done, and hire on to a ltl outfit that will let you use thier truck to take the road tests ( will probaly hafta hump the docks but hey)
you will learn alot from the other drivers and with your permit in hand you can drive with them in the second seat, that said you probaly wont make sqaut but it is worth it in the long run
after you finish the tests and have a license get a few months in driving p&d, then try for a line hual that stays instate....and if desired in the spring find an outfit pullin belly or side dumps (again in state) but it will pay better plus give you alot of experiance in driving in hard to manuaver areas
then when your 21 and think you have to much money you can hire on to a otr outfit as an experianced driver......your pay will be higher then a newbie if nothing else
i know a few this statagy has worked for
btw...im a reservist and skipping drill just to make it up later is a pain...but with an understanding command it will be ok -
Your construction job, is it framer, mason or road construction? Well any wayz. Road construction companies may help with this. Dump truck (CDL B), or even if they have their own heavy equipment hualers (CDL A).
Look to see if they have a fuelman position. driving fuel tanker fueling heavy equipment such bulldozers backhoes etc. Then you'll learn how to operate those too. -
I am talking long term. It is not the trucking company it is the military. Get laid out somewhere and miss a drill and see what happens. -
Doe's the NG company your in have trucks? Most military companies have trucks. So why not ask to change or add to your MOS to truck driver and have the military send you to school. The construction company you work for now will have to let you go to school for the reserve or guards. if that don't work then use the education benifits the Guards and reserves give you. I had 5 yrs active duty and retired out of the national Guard. The last 2 week drill I had was in Hartford Conneticut for turbine engine school. I worked on helicopters for 21 yrs. I just paid for going to school out of my pocket and I am driving locally on my 1st driving job. P.S. When I get to 60 I will make a nice pension and I get really cheap health insurance so don't count out a full time military guard or reserve job.petesout
