It is very, very difficult to do. It takes an extremely long time and you will need a lawyer that specializes in military law; it will be expensive. You have apply to a review board and bring serious proof that your discharge was incorrect. I have a friend that worked as a Yeoman for the board a few years back, he told me only about 1% get overturned. One he was there for took eight years. A reclassification really only works for they type of discharge, not the classification.
Don't get discouraged though, if your DD214 says HONORABLE, that's what really matters. It sounds like you may have gotten out on a "personality disorder" which can mean a lot of different things. Sleepwalking, bed wetting, anxiety, adjustment disorder, ect. Those all fall under personality disorder. Don't volunteer too much information. Maybe you could try applying someplace else and just give them the DD214 Short Form unless then specifically ask for the Long Form.

it was other than honorable discharge for smoking pot. even though we all do stupid stuff when we are young, maybe i should just give up on becoming a truck driver ????

There is a lot involved with it and your best bet is to start butt kissin at the local VFW so that they will wright you a recommendation. I think there is also a time limit before you can apply for one in which you can get into no other trouble during. -
It could be a lot worse than an OTH. Lots of people get out for such things. Plus, it was more than 10 years ago. Granted it does stick with you, but not like the military would like you to believe. Just keep applying to places, no need to give up until you have exhausted your resources. Best of luck.

Contact the VA in your area and they should be able to help with the Discharge Review Board proceedings.

My husband was a milatary police officer in the late 70's early 80's. His DD214 state he was honorably discharged. I don't think I would lie about it if I were you. I am almost sure they checked that during his background check when we originally started with Panther. It could of been for the Canada fast pass but not sure if it was just for that or for the background itself.

Also there is no discharge that is other than hororable. It's a General Discharge with other than horoable conidtions. If all the rumors are true it's not that hard to do. Now if you had something worse, then yes forget it. It would be almost impossible to upgrade for the three other types. UD Undesirable, BCD Bad Conduct Discharge, and DD Dishonorable Discharge. The UD is given by administrative action, the BCD is given by general or special court-martial, and the DD is only given by a general court-martial. Those are the types you'd need a lawyer and tons of money.
If I were you and they asked I say yes I was in the service and let them see your DD214. I wouldn't try to hide it because it's not that big a deal. There's more general discharges out there than you think. But it's still a good idea to try to have it upgraded. If those contacts don't work then contact the personnel office at your nearest base and ask them. -
I suppose we all hear something different about the board. No, legal advice isn't required but it sure is helpful. From my understanding, having the discharge changed is not an easy thing to do, but not impossible either. General under OTH is not the end of the world. I just got out at the beginning of the month and we all had to hear this brief, whether it applied or not.

i have had alot of people in the trucking industry tell me since i got out in 1995 , to just not worry about it. and as a matter of fact to just say honorable, and since it has been over ten years nobody will even check ! does anyone agree with this ? these guys told me they had exactly the same problem and they got out in 1993 and work for swift and nobody ever checked because of the 10 year rule .

If I were going to lie I just wouldn't tell them you served. Tell them you served they may ask for the dd214.
