Wassup y'all. I am restarting my daily posts of life out on the road working as an OTR driver for millis. My previous thread sort of went down the tubes, so I'm starting fresh on this thread. I'll be giving a daily account of my time out here so that people looking into starting a career in trucking and working for Millis can get an idea of what to expect. I have 3 other threads, and pretty much every question you may have about Millis can be answered by reading them. The thread titled "Millis Transfer training school" details my time at the Trenton, Ohio school. The thread titled "On the road with Millis" details my time after school with my trainer. The thread titled "On the road with Millis" details my time after my trainer, driving in my own truck. If you have questions that aren't answered in those threads, please feel free to post questions in the last thread I mentioned. That thread is still active and being followed by several current drivers, including me. There are also a couple former drivers that follow that thread and chime in from time to time. Alrighty, party people, let's get this train rollin'. This has been a strange week. It's been a good week, but definitely not typical. As an OTR driver, it's normal for us to touch 3-5 loads a week. THIS week, it's been double that. It does happen from time to time, it's part of the job. But, shorter runs happen. They all add up at the end of the week, and the miles all pay the same. This weekend has been the strangest part of the week. I will limit this post to those runs, otherwise this post will be a mile long. So, on Friday I had a load that delivered in Cincinnati. When I hit the "ready for dispatch" button, I was informed that there were no loads available. So I asked permission to head to Trenton (only 20 miles away) and was given permission to do so. I fueled up and got parked, asked Opie if anything came through. Nothing yet. Here's where the universe loves to kick me in the nuts. I put my truck in the garage to get my truck's battery issue addressed. I got a load and a pre plan while the truck was in the garage. I didn't see it until the service was done. Luckily, my load was a trailer from the Miller drop lot. But....if I saw that message when it came through, I would have had time to go get it before my clock ran out. Cripes. So, I picked it up as soon as my 10 was over, then came back to the terminal to weigh it. Then headed out to the final. I dropped it off, then headed to the next stop on my pre-plan. Just BARELY made it. I was kicking myself for assuming that no load was coming the day before, because I wouldn't have been so close on time. But all's well that ends well. Delivered that the following day, then picked up my current load. That was a little tricky. I had a 24 hour window on the drop, but a very specific time for my next pickup. So I had to do my best to plan for travel time, without wasting too much of my 14. Got that handled, and headed on my way. I was in Wisconsin, heading to WV. I could either stay north of Chicago and park, or burn up all remaining time to get south of there and away from the headaches. I chose the latter. I went as far as I could today, considering the parking options I had available to me. I'm in Youngstown right now. I'm going a little out of route, but if I went to the Pennsylvania turnpike and had no place to park, I would have been screwed. I didn't go as far as I would have liked, but it is what it is. When I get to my final, I will have roughly half of my run time left, and that ain't bad. I'll take it. So, greetings from Youngstown. I'm friggin' tired, and going to bed.
