For the last 2 months I have been trying to decide where to go for my training to become a truck driver. So I have narrowed the search down to two. I have heard great things about Roehl and for Millis I haven't heard anything good but also haven't heard anything bad either.
I have been living in Dayton, OH for a little over 2 years now. I am originally from Indianapolis area. So if I go to Roehl I have an opportunity to pass by and say hi to my folks back in Indy and it also might give me more of an advantage for hometime.
Then I heard about Millis Training Institute in Trenton, OH which is only an hour and a half away. Which that is what caught my eye about Millis. Do I go to Roehl and have to pay for lodging and transportation or do I skip the lodging and save gas money to go with Millis? Here is my dilemma, where do I go?
My main concerns about where to go depends on which company is a better place to start out being a green horn. Who offers better hometime after training? Who is more helpful for new drivers. Any knowledge or advice would help.
Millis Training Institute or Roehl Driver Training Center?

I won't be much help to decide which one to go with but one thing about your post caught my eye. I would not base where to get training and start a career by the amount of gas money or hotel costs you have to pay. I would be more concerned about the quality of the company and training you get and be willing to pay more to get it.
I do know that Roehl has 14/7, 7/4, or 7/3 plans depending on where you live so they could get you home pretty often if you liked but you won't make as much money that way.94coupe, Ajv1987 and joseph1135 Thank this. -
Millis does not pay for your hotel. They will finance it for you interest free for an additional $10 per paycheck weekly until paid off. (and no I am not a recruiter!)
As far as training goes, I don't think you will be disappointed in either one. From all I have read and heard, both companies want to see you succeed. They won't kick you to the curb if you are not progressing as fast as others. As long as you show them you are serious, making progress, and are a safe driver when training, they will do all they can to make sure you are successful. -
Hey rubberducky68, I appreciate the information. I am glad to hear that they both are good companies. If you had to choose, which company would you go with?
-
Millis. The classes will be smaller and you'll have more attention paid to your needs. Going by the financial aspect alone isn't smart.

Millis (I've worked there) is a good company, have well equipped trucks (no apu's though) and is much smaller than Roehl.

You're right joseph1135, although financials are important is shouldn't be the decider of where I go. It sounds like Millis will be a better place starting out. Smaller classes will help since I am new to this. Thanks for the added info, I plan on contacting Millis today. I am excited to get this journey rolling!

I enjoy working for roehl. My dispatcher keeps me moving. I didn't go to their school though. A few guys I've talked to that have done their school says Its a lot better than any cdl mill you'll go too.
Good luck in either you go with, millis seems like they take great care of their equipment too.
EthanAjv1987 Thanks this. -
Ajv1987 Like others have said, I don't think you will go wrong with either company, they both have separate pro's... One on Millis's HUGE pro's is the small class size. You will be hard pressed to find a post anywhere on here that says anything bad about the instructors. One of Roehl's Pro's is the run, Van, Flat, and refer, so if you don't like one or the other you can switch. Another one of Millis Pro's is they rotate their trucks every 3 years, so you know you will always be in a nice truck. Both companies run mostly east of the Mississippi. Millis runs mostly KW tractors
and Roehl runs freightliners. Its all up to you man.

I've just finished CDL school and chose Roehl. I'm not in Millis hiring area but I did look at the company. Another good research source is the FMCSA web site on safety ratings. Roehl wins there:
