Pilots/Flying Js and Loves have the bean-to-cup coffee makers that make good coffee, IMO. Since I've been in trucking there has been far more decent and good coffee than bad coffee. Generally, the bad coffee is bad because the machines are in constant use and if you don't clean a coffee-maker it eventually start making coffee that tastes like someone left a few cigarette butts in it. I brought a Presto MyJo single k-cup coffee maker with me in case I needed good coffee and couldn't find it. I could make my own. I learned the rarity of bad coffee at truck stops and the hassle of making my own meant I usually bought coffee (especially the bean-to-cup) at the truck stop. When I worked out West for 2 years I did by the cheap automatic-drip 4 cup coffee maker form Walmart and used that when the truck stop coffee was not up to par.

During training the key is to be as minimal as possible because you won't have room for anything but your clothes and someone else is making 99% of of decisions about schedule. Life gets much easier when you get your solo truck. If your company allows you to pick fuel stops, concentrate your fuel purchases at one chain of truck stops. If you do that at a Loves or Pilot/Flying J you will easily buy enough fuel to qualify for daily showers and coffee next month. At Loves that requires buying 1,000 gallons of fuel in a month. I think PFJ has a similar threshold for free showers. Shower in the EARLY mornings, as the showers are not busy. Back the truck and trailer every chance you get. It's the fastest way to get good at backing. Good luck.

Thanks for the down low tscott!

Any particular brand of wipes work good in-between showers? I doubt the baby wipes I utilized during my time in the army would be very effective at removing my meat sweats.

On to this JJ Keller training, not bad. Stayed up way too late watching the Jets destroy my Pack.

    Thanks all!

I was able to shower daily OTR if I focused my fuel purchase at one chain of truck stops, Like Loves or PFJ. I would carry any random brand of baby wipes for days I could not get a real shower or just needed a quick cleanup. While sharing a trainer's truck, you won't have much you can bring and the trainer sets the schedule, so showers can be hard to get.

In my solo truck I had a setup using an electric kettle, 2 small dishwashing tubs and a 1 liter bottle that I could use to wash my hair, face, hands, etc, etc when the truck stop was too nasty, crowded, dangerous to get a real shower. I'd pour the used "grey water" into a 1/2 gallon Snapple ice tea plastic bottle and pour that bottle out the next day in the shower's toilet when I got a real shower in the truck stop. You can expand the above to include almost everything you would use a truck stop shower and restroom for, if you plan/purchase well and you never, ever, not even once need to dump waste on someone's ground like an animal or leave even the smallest bit of litter behind. It depends on how much time and energy someone wants to plan and prepare for whatever they need to do.

I felt like baby wipes left a residue so if I used them I would always wet a paper towel and wipe down with that last to get rid of the residue. I found buying fuel to get unlimited showers next month, getting showers' VERY early in the am, not at dinner time with the 99.95% of truck drivers trying to get a shower at the same time, meant I could shower virtually every day in a truck stop or using my system in the truck.

A little update. Previously driving a wee lil trailer with a boat means absolutely squat.

73 feet of vehicle, 2 flat and 2 convex mirrors and where/when to articulate your truck in objects so small in the mirror..... Ugghhh!

Respect! Honestly didn't think it would be that hard and no I'm not that guy.

If your down on yourself or the industry and you've got ANY type of tenure and safety record hold that head up! Respect.

    Finally! A Trekkie!

TGIF - 34 hour reset numero 2 in my short truck driving career.

Took a non-typical overnight long trip w/trainer through some big cities with our small group. Got about 400 miles of REAL WORLD butt puckering driving experience in and LOVED every minute of it except the sorry excuse for truck stops and the sad personal vehicle drivers who don't understand personal space. I've operated a personal vehicle for 31 years and have NEVER drove with their lack of common sense around commercial vehicles. It was surprisingly hard to maintain that equal space on both sides as i favor that shoulder away from center line until a respected classmate w/driving experience suggested to forget the truck and picture where i am at on the road. This worked and allowed me to then use my mirrors for hazard observation and was so much more relaxing.

Range time this week felt better. Starting to understand the equipment and how it behaves, mirror management even if my depth perception is still off some getting used to 73 feet.

Limited range time this week, Today mostly and nailed offset and almost 90 degree alley to drivers side. Baby steps. Starting to feel one with the equipment. It really is almost a zen state...

It's funny really, you posting that original Spock pic. Many iterations of Star Trek have come and gone with various Captains/Actors and other roles of Star Trek infamy.

No one has nailed down the role of Vulcan crew member/1st officer as Leonard Nimoy! RIP Leonard!

I'll gladly give my review of my company sponsored driver training program once i'm done with my cdl a in hand. I just want to run this thread past my trainers to make sure i don't post anything stupid to get them in trouble with these overbearing and unconstitutional corporate anti-social media campaigns. They have years vested and i only weeks. I feel they are doing everything properly and within guidelines or i wouldn't be there to begin with.

I highly doubt most here, if honest, would want to drive for them as they certainly aren't the highest paying and seem geared towards people like me. ZERO Semi Tractor/Trailer knowledge before this fall. The thought of spending a semester or two in tech school for more theory based bs at $7,500-$10,000 sickened me. Been there and done that = no job unless i uprooted my family.

I agreed to give them a year. My word is my bond. That doesn't mean that i wont be tracking my hourly commitment OTR to see if I'm pulling down the same wages as a local hourly paid driver, my feeling is no once you consider time and a half laws. At the end of the day business is business and the company i chose has a six year vested clause for their 401k. Pretty silly really considering the overall pay and benefits package.
