I have a chance to pull lumber and veneer logs for a friend of mine but I need to get insurance of my own to pull his flatbed trailer with his truck. I just need to get the minimum coverage for the T&T combo to pull for him, I also have been offered a chance to pull containers from the local port but again I just need to get basic coverage. Does anyone know what the basic coverage requirements for a T&T combo in Virginia would be and if there is any federal minimum coverage requirements?

If you are talking about cargo insurance it would be up to them to decide what the minimum would be but if you are talking about liability insurance it is either 750,000. At least that is what it used to be.
I do not know why you would have to get this as you state that it is his truck. Am I missing something? If you are going to lease it from him then you need to get with him and see what requirements you need. -

I think you may be talking about cartage insurance. That covers any trailer that you may pull. You might be able to just buy comprehensive insurance on the trailer. The cost to cover the trailer usually runs from 2 1/2-5% of the stated value. If you are talking about liability, the fmcsa requires $750,000 auto liability, but most brokers and shippers requires a minimum coverage of $1 million. The fmcsa no longer requires cargo insurance, but most brokers and shippers require a minimum coverage of $100,000.

Thanks
The reason my friend wants ME to get the insurance is because I would be subcontracting from him and his insurance company want's an arm, leg, torso, and what ever else they can get to put me on with them. I know I am going to need to come up with $2-3K just for the down payment for insurance and up to $15,000 for the year depending on the company. Now that I have a little better idea of what exactly I need for insurance that gives me a better idea of what I need to ask Progressive or another commercial insurance provider.
