Is there a certain distance the landing gear feet must be from the pavement when retracted? I cant seem to find anything in the little green book...

all the way up until they hit the stops......that's the only good policy in my opinion
-
All the way up Its good EXERCISE
and no chance of hitting something you did not plan on and damaging it.

My current trailer's landing gear stops about half-way up (8" ground clearance -- and judging from the rust line, it has been like this for some time). But having spent time in the shop with my last 4 trailers & with an inconsiderate shipper already ticking away at my 14, I'm wondering if I can let good policy slide this time ( or if it is instead a legal requirement.)

Sounds like it has been that way a while. Does it hang down lower than your brake chambers ? Are their any points on the vehicle lower than the landing gear ? If pads are not closer to the ground than other parts, I would get to trucking, but REMEMBER when you get to a RR crossing, bumps, and stay out of holes that would cause your drive axles to dip down. Just my thoughts, not sure of any legal problem.
airforcetoo Thanks this. -
It hangs lower than everything else. The brake chambers are about 12" off the ground -- the differential is about 10". I know the route and am not worried about scraping anywhere -- I'm just concerned about encountering an eager DOT officer along the way.

not likely they will say anything, I've had container chassis where the landing gear was barely 4" off the ground.
