If you've got over a year or more driving, go talk to BigBadBill at Farm2Fleet.

I have been there since July and it's been a great experience. I would only lease on there I think or have my own authority. It's so laid back, it's like a rockin' chair.

You get out of it what you put into it.

I have been since November doing paperwork now I am waiting on my drug test which I took on the 21st of December. It is a long and tedious process.

You need to figure out your per mile operational cost and try like a SOB to get a least $1.00 per mile over it. If you get stuck somewhere.. string some shorter loads that pay better together in the direction you need to go to hit another longer/high paying load. Shorter loads for the most part have a higher per mile rate..but they eat up time.. work the black art of it as best you can.

That is exactly where this comes from.

Experience shows me I average about 500 miles per day over time.

My actual fixed overhead expenses (insurance, phone, salary, load boards etc) average out to about $400 per day for 19 days I am out. (that includes a profit in there too).

My variable (fuel and maintenance) expenses are about $0.88 per mile.

Put those all together and that's how I figure my rates.

It will be worth the wait... just make sure to give yourself about 6 months to learn the system and the boards/agents. I love it here at LS and glad I came back after I left in 2009. I am running a stepdeck now tho, back then i was pulling a van. From what I've seen in our area (Chicagoland) you should be able to do well with a van IF you stick to the midwest and don't go chasing some big $$ loads out of the area. that's when you'll get hurt. I've done a lot of research and you should be able to make $3,500 week before fuel and be home weeeknds running IN/IL/OH/MI/KY with a van trailer, if you work hard at it. Most local stuff pays about $2.50-$3 mile for under 250 miles, andsometimes better. Most guys hook up with an agent in their area that does frequent loads and just run for them. I have a freind near me that pulls for LS as well and he runs a van trailer. He loads everyday in IL and goes to Grand Rapids. Then unloads/reloads and goes back at $1,000 a turn. He does 4 a week and off FRI/SAT/SUN. Now that's a lucky run, but I've heard a lot of stories like that here at Landstar. Just have to prove yourself to a few agents and they will take care of ya.

Unless you can load 24/7 and unload 24/7, my experience with short loads (200-250 mi) do eat up most of the day. As an example, You're dispatched at 0730 25 mi to shipper. You do the usual BS getting in the gate and checking in etc then backing in and actually getting loaded. Then you roll for 5 hrs (approx) and deal with the usual BS at the consignee, but when it's all said and done, you've used up most of the day for that one load. So, that one load better pay real good, right ?

I usually wind up getting hosed on short runs too. My hat's off to the guys who are able to do it all the time. I always wind up losing whatever profit margin I had to deadheading or time. It's situational though, sometimes a little run works out great, especially if I have paper work to get caught up on or need to get the truck pm'd or something.
