Grandfathered unlimited data plans that some Verizon customers are selling via assumption of liability contracts or by rental agreements. Some of the rental plans come with a hotspot modem and some require that you have your own. If you hop on Ebay, you will be able to see the auctions.

Verizon ended assumption of liability for unlimited data plans but there are still some ways to do it. If you contact one of the sellers on eBay they might explain it. But not easy. You could also rent the unlimited data month to month and pay the seller through PayPal. Those mostly go for close to $200 a month but you're talking true completely unlimited Verizon data which covers even a lot of remote locations.

ok folks, you forced me to signup after reading this thread! LOL
I'm early retired computer support specialist. Did it for 30 years so you can imagine both wife & I want the data!
We have Verizon, yeah it pricey BUT they have the market on coverage. If ya have the time to search out a data signal then you can find a better deal with someone else.
I was looking for a wireless router for our coach & ran across a router manufactured by a company called Peplink. This router looks like any other standard router, power, 4 WAN ports power & two antennas but that's just the outside! On the back you will notice a USB port. Purchase a USB data modem and bingo, Data via your provider. When you pull in to a location with WiFi you log onto the router via the routers web page, connect to the Wifi signal & now instead of your cellular data your now connected to WiFi. You can drag your cellular wan to PRIORITY 2 and it will act as a backup in case the WiFi drops. You can also create multiple access points & such. A really powerful mobile router for about $130.00.

$179.00 not bad compared to the higher end routers in the 500/600 dollar range. The 3G store is convenient because they sell everything cellular related e.g. antennas, amplifiers, data modems & such.
As stated above, public wifi sucks unless you can snag a fast WiFi signal elsewhere.

j72088 and albert l Thank this.
