I'm sorry but you are not buying a New Continental virgin tire for $260, even if it went up 15% I'd still like to see that invoice. So you would spend $200 on a used tire, & you don't think that's a ripoff, especially when your getting those $260 tires. You just totally contradicted yourself from paragraph 1 to paragraph 2.

New tires have had price increases of thirty percent at least twice in the last fifteen months. Raw materials are in short supply plus inflation. You can't even buy new Chinese tires for cheap anymore.

    vangtransport Thanks this.

Different company, different brand tire, and two years later. You can't see the difference between a tire bought on a national account 2 years ago and one bought 4 months ago from behind a T/S? I didn't contradict myself at all.

Like rollin coal said, prices have gone way up in the past couple years.

You chimed in saying that it's a plan for failure by buying a new tire from a T/S, then you chimed in again that you bought a used tire from the T/A for $275, is the T/A not a truck stop?(contradiction) Or are you arguing that it's a good plan to run discarded tires vs new. Then you chimed in that one should plan for such a thing, was it your plan to buy from the T/A?(contradiction) I would assume that if you have a plan that you would be carrying a used tire & wouldn't need to buy from a T/S. I agree 110% with RC, which is why the OP should plan on paying $500-$600 for a new tire on a road call, and that tire will not be made of gold. Not everyone buys off the used tire rack, what if you took that $275 tire up the road for 600 miles & had a blow out, was it worth not spending the difference from a new one? The point to the O/P was there are extra costs!!!

Buddy of mine blew a drive yesterday, enroute from Va to Denver - cost him $300 for a used T/S tire, installed.

Used T/S tire likely only had 3/32's on it - but it got him back down the road (he was able to limp off the highway to the T/S, and didn't have to do a road service - probably stressing the other tire in the dual in the process). So it is a good "interim fix" - but not a great permanent one - especially if he doesn't replace it soon, and rolls an L1 somewhere and gets put OOS for a bad tire.

There's probably a GOOD REASON WHY the tires in the "used pile" are there IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Not saying that in "exigent circumstances", a used tire that will get you to your receiver isn't a good TEMPORARY FIX - but how long would you want to RUN that used tire -without looking to replace it with a new one?

I agree with Vang, conceptually, it's a good (civil for a change) conversation regarding this - but the reality of what we were trying to express to the OP is - repairs cost $$, not figuring in the $$ to do them in his business model is not doing a business model based on REALITY. I'd rather "plan for" higher expenses and find "a deal" when an emergency arises - than not be PREPARED for it - by PLANNING AHEAD.

Another thing to think about is at $275 on average you may have 1/3 of the original tread left. So take that $275 multiply by 3 now you are at $825, and that's no roadside blow out, and no warranty. I'll stick to my business module of replacing with new cause I've never paid $825 for a tire. But like you said under certain circumstances you may need to replace with used, like if you are past that point of warranty credit.

I have kept my best tire as a spare when I have replaced tires on my trucks. It can make a good spare to use until I can find a new tire without having to pay the exorbatant prices at truck stops. I had Wingfoot at a Pilot want to charge me $175 for a used tire that their local tire store (also Wingfoot) would have sold me for $100. Try to keep at least one spare on your truck. It will save you money in the long run. I have yet to find a tire dealer or truck stop that can beat prices that I pay at home. I only buy something on the road when absolutely necessary.

And now you can't tell the difference between a new and used tire. What is wrong with you?

I didn't own the truck, so duh, of course I didn't have the option of buying tires and carrying spares. Keep trying, and failing.
