My wife and I built a brand new house for 210k 3 years ago. It is not a mcmansion but 3 bed 2 bath ranch. A heck of a lot nicer than my friends and family have that drive new and nicer cars than we do.

We can’t really be comparing housing costs because it ranges from area to area.

If the average is 400k, then there are numerous houses under 400k. Part of the problem is that too many people think they need/ deserve their dream house. By working your way up in houses, $400k can be affordable.[/QUOTE]

Any cheaper houses to be had. Are gone within an hour.

We're in a population boom. We're also one of the states who's values DIDN'T drop during the depression.

We've got apartments and houses going up everywhere and it can't keep up with demand. E we're exploding.

    Right here in the south.

Down the 64 towards Conway is a subdivision of new built homes established within two years ago selling for 110K to 150K flat done and done.

Maryland is the one that's overpriced at half million crappy colonial homes etc.

Ours was 33K 25 years ago, sold at 45K some years ago. Probably valued roughly 70K by now.
