I see the pluses and minuses of contract and spot. Running spot I can sit for a bit and have my hours catch up while I negotiate a load from a broker in a need. If I set for 1-2 days, no sweat. Costs me no more than my fixed costs. I do see the reason for having customers when spot dries up. No, not all on board is left overs. That is a myth. Many shippers only do occasional loads.

Spot rates change though. These aren't fixed. Why brokers would want to commit themselves to carriers who always use the time to charge the highest rate when rates are pretty high for the same lane? To build relationships, you need to make your rate good enough to stick to it. Then raise it when you can.
Then you can make your payments, good living no matter the situation?
Brokers I work with don't' pay me current rates. They pay me a lot more what you see on boards. Not as high as we have seen it. But still decent taking the circumstances...
Everyone has a different plan. Some like the unknown. It works for them.
    Everyone is different...

How long others can last in a dry season, seasons?
I have my authority for only two years. If you can remember the longest dry season? How much time off was needed for ones waiting...

The same. We are in the same boat. I need to buy also tools for about $3,500. He got to the best automotive school in the country, a four year degree. It's hard to get into. People who finish that program get hired before they graduate. They are actually doing research there.

He's working on getting more scholarships. He got a bit, but not enough. But there is still time to get more money. Otherwise, I am paying it. I want my kids start their lives without loans over their necks.
I have only one concern: women. I hope he will not get distracted.

Just heard latest news. Reefer rates dropped for the week, however more loads have been posted. So we may see rates go up for Reefer slightly. Takes a bit for rates to go back up after hearing the rates are down, this is what we pay. If the loads don’t move, we’ll rates go up. Nothing new..

Successful people get shunned for their thinking.
I'm not running for low rates. Ones who are running now are...

I do believe people who ran for the highest rate using right lanes must have saved enough to stay home now. Might be working less for the same outcome. They might be the ones laughing or crying now depending on their circumstances...

That's it right there. I ran for a regular for over a year and a half for a discounted rate because I was guaranteed at least one load per week. It was great having that secure feeling but after a while it became too much like a job and an anchor. They eventually started taking things for granted and it fell apart. This began when the current wave began to crash. I don't believe that's a coincidence at all. I'll never do it again unless I have employees.
