While I have not personally seen one of these critters in 25 years, the tales of woe and gnashing of teeth over infantile policies enforced ruthlessly and unthinkingly leads me to conclude they still exist. They seem to have entrenched themselves deeply within the bureaucracy of the mega carrier, and possess nearly life or death power over their micromanaged fiefdom of serfs.

And while it may seem implausible, it would appear they know even less about actual trucking than the safety man they devolved from.

This is following the trend of many of the auto manufacturers that the third brake light flashes 3 to 5 times before going solid when braking. It started with Mercedes and BMW cars about 10 or 15 yrs ago and has moved to others, many GM sedans do it as well. Also common on a lot of the European trucks, if you watch any of the trucking videos out of Europe you'll see it. It's called an attention getter. It's also similar to the panic/emergency braking/4 ways feature on most European and some American cars, in a panic braking situation, along with brake lights, it activates your 4-ways.

Actually, I've never noticed traffic bottling up around me when I use them, but, I as I noticed a couple days ago, a new W9L sliding off Hwy 79 in SD when traffic was braking suddenly due to the 20 to 30 large Elk crossing the highway, and everyone braking and hitting their hazards, except the super trucker who was apparently busy doing something else, when he suddenly looked up, everyone was stopping, he cranked it onto the shoulder and went about 100 ft into the field before coming to a stop in the mud.

All the Phil Long dealers put a module on their cars to flash the 3rd brake, and rape the customer a few hundred bucks in markup on them.

I should’ve kept track today of how many trucks I saw in Montana running with their hazards on but not bothering to ever stop and clear their taillights off.

My problem with the constant use of four ways is that everybody gets used to seeing them and they lose all meaning when you are really trying send a message

Fog lights. They either should be outlawed or unable to come on unless visibility is less than a quarter mile.

In my truck at night they turn on automatically when you use a turn signal while moving slow. I wonder how many times I got called a dirty SOB for that.
