So I checked it out, you can go up to the light room, but not inside. Well, I made it halfway up the steps on the inside, no railing, no backs, and came back down. Apparently, it's like a big wind up watch mechanism. The keepers job , among other things, ( trimming wick, adding oil)was to wind the weight back up to the top, and as the weight fell slowly, it wound the clock spring, turning the light. Fog horn too, how did that work. It was a huge steam operated bellows. Now, because the trees have grown taller than the lighthouse, it's all replaced by an electric light and horn.

The light is long gone from my grandparent's lighthouse. Not sure if it was a flashing light or continuous but I don't recall every seeing any stuff like that in there. They rented it out from the 1970's to ~2010.
