Did a lot of work for NASA years ago. This is the Payload for the Contour Space Mission. Built at the Applied Physics Lab, Laurel, Md. Would haul it back and forth from there to Goddard Space Flight Center, in Greenbelt, Md for testing. Then eventually down to Cape Canaveral for its flight. Asked the chief one time what was the value. Got the well it's hard to put a price on all the R+D but, roughly $550 million, 9 figures. Pics are out on the launch pad unloading at Canaveral. Last pic is the money shot, what was inside the can. Tax dollars at work.

Then you would have to haul it for free. After all, we can't be having transportation cost driving up the price.

    45,000 lbs of copper tubing.
    Brand new,clean as a whistle.
    5000 lbs on a pallet.

It was rolled up like electrical wire.
When you stood at the back of the trailer
With the doors open, you were almost
    Blinded by the gold color.

Have no idea what is was worth.
But it would have been a pile of
    Cash wherever I took it.

The price hasn't skyrocketed because of transportation costs, it has skyrocketed because of greedy execs in big pharma. If you listen closely you'll probably hear Frederick Banting rolling over in his grave.

I am a capitalist. Price gouging people whose only choice is pay up or die is pretty crappy though, especially for a drug discovered a hundred years ago.

Looks like Walmart is stepping up to the plate offering insulin at lower costs. Maybe Mee-Maw won't have to ration her insulin this month....

Yes, but you said it should be free. That requires every step to be free also. From the scientist that made the formula to the manufacturing to the guys making the plastic injection pens to the truck driver delivering everything to the pharmacist that dispenses it.
So, are you willing to do your part to make it free?

Bean Jr. and RockinChair Thank this.

Scientist did his part, refused his name on patent. Co-inventors sold to University of Toronto for $1.

But I think it should be free, paid for by the pharmaceutical cartel that has profited off the price gouging for so long. I never said the guys trucking it shouldn't be compensated, or the manufacturers, or the pharmacist.

That's not what will happen though, the taxpayers will continue subsidizing the pharmaceutical companies while they privatize the profit. Meanwhile the trucker, the guy working the manufacturing line, and the pharmacist will be screwed if they get the diabeetus.

But you keep on staning for them ;). Getting pretty outside the purview of this thread though.
