A "starter" house in Hawaii on O'ahu is about a half million for something decent. There are daycabs, but don't remember ever seeing a sleeper...<G>
Consider that you can drive (ok, ride a motorcycle) all day .. like 9-10 hours... and go a whole 140 miles... that includes lunchtime and pbly dinner as well....<G>
You can put about 400 miles on a weekend, running back and forth from town to the suburbs, etc.... longest ride with no stoplight is maybe 40 miles, more or less.... But... the scenery is terrific! and so and the people and the food..ok, I got a bit carried away. Scenery up here in North Texas (DFW area) is pretty boring unless you like lots and lots of overpasses. And cows.

Its just a statistic...
Here is the article if anyone else wants to look:
Truckers Report Ultimate Industry Guide 2011
Mississippi is indeed #1 in "Highest Average Trucker Salary".
All it really means is that all MS truck drivers totalled together in 2011 averaged a higher income than drivers in any other state. But think about that for a minute. Thats a pretty vague statistic. It could specifically mean a couple things...
1. Highest number of tenured truck drivers (the longer you stay with a company, the more you typically make)
2. Highest number of drivers who chose to work for better paying companies.
3. Higher than average number of LTL companies?
4. -Insert your assumption here-Last edited: Jan 26, 2013

I've wondered about that myself after seeing that list and here's my opinion. Mississippi is kind of in a great location, it's easily within a days drive of Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Memphis, Nashville, and quite a few other cities that have a lot of industry. If you were going to run regionally in the se, Mississippi would be the ideal state to do it from imo.

Speaking as a native Mississippian, it's nice to finally be on the top of something good instead of teen pregnancy, high school drop-outs, diabetes, obesity, and whatever else people are making fun of us for. But remember this- all we have to do is look to West Memphis to make ourselves feel better

Not sure how that stat was generated but just off the top of my head I would think Ohio and Illinois would be the two highest. My reasoning would be generally those states have reasonable intelligent hard working people, all the major LTL and parcel companies have multiple hubs there, and there has always been a big union influence in those states. The one o/o I know well is from Ohio and he does very well too as do his buddies - never more than a few miles from good paying freight into the Northeast and he says loads back there pay alright too.

As for areas to live in, unless you have kin folks in the smaller towns, I would stay around he bigger cities. I was born and raised in Grenada, which is exactly the half-way point on I 55 between Memphis and Jackson. Grenada is a small town, and not much to do unless you're from there. As far as big cities, Jackson is the biggest. Jackson is really a you-know-what kind of hole with absolutely nothing going for it. Lot of companies have drop yards and terminals there though. It's home base for KLLM if you want to run reefers. I drive for Total Transportation of Mississippi, and our place is right by KLMM's just off the junction of I 20 and 55. The coast around Biloxi and Gulfport is nice. I 10 runs through it. That part of the state is like another world. It's really more like New Orleans than the rest of Mississippi. You are actually only about 45 minutes east of New Orleans down there. The other place is Southahven and Olive Branch, which is just south of Memphis on i55. There's a lot of trucking companies up there- the ones I know of that have places up there include Swift, US Xpress (our company is owned by them and we share a terminal up there with them), USA truck, Schneider, JB Hunt, Knight, and others. There is ALWAYS freight moving in and out of Memphis. Lots of time-sensitive FED-EX freight in and out of there.
So there you have it. If you want to be a truck driver, then Mississippi has you covered. Do you want to open up a business like Apple Computer? Then I would stay in CA, but Mississippi is a pretty good place to be from. Some say a good place to be FAR from. But again, at least I'm not from West Memphis.
