this was a special projects truck, Freightliner Columbia daycab on a stretched chassis with a generator behind the cab, pulling what looked liked a modified bedbug trailer, all white, no markings at all, only plastic Property USAF plates on front/back. My permit book was 4 pages: B.O.L., registration, letter from USAF essentially saying Do Not Delay, and a contacts list. It was a mobile radar platform, two Landstar RGN's arrived about 4 hours after me with the radar platforms. Ultimate final destination after two months of testing So. Fla., was Columbia. I came out of C. Springs on 24, hit the scale at Limon, she hit the park light, as I rolled by she saw the USAF plate and said have a nice trip. At Goodland, I rolled on the scale, they hit the light, when I rolled by they saw the plate, I walked in they said have a nice day and told me I didn't have to stop again till Missouri, never saw an open scale in Missouri. Rolled through Ill. Tenn., Ky., Ga., and Fla. Only place to give me any issue was a combo. ag station/scale in Fla. just before the turnpike. They were more curious why there was no markings on it.

My moms cousin ran bullracks back in the 70s. He told me about popping pills and running for four or five days straight with a wad of cash to pay the mickey mouse energy wasting fines for running 75-80 during the early double nickel days running with the Monfort boys into Kansas before reloading and heading back to Greeley. Weigh stations didn't even waste their time looking at their logbooks He said it was fun but killed his heart witb those pills.

Lot of hands run with a pocket full of pills and a wad of cash to pay the locals. Some still may but I think its a lot less common. My uncle pulled a wagon and a reefer for years the first thing he told me is thats the road to ruin, never seen anybody survive at long that way. Personally there is too much at risk for me to do it, so much has changed. I bet we can't run with the ol hands either though. I think I do pretty good barefoot hadn't hollered calf roped yet. lol

Look folks, there is this a point about applying HOS... and there IS a point where running hard can get insane... and it's overly dangerous. I'll give you an example of insane, and overly dangerous... I know a guy that has done 11 YES 11 back to back only stopping for fuel and to unload and reload... Clinton Ia to North Muskegon Mi... It's about 338 miles one way(folks this is staying awake for over 5 freaken days)... Yes he ran it without sleep, this is bordering on what the human body can take before you die... Yes, it IS over 7000 miles... Like I said insane.. and even hard to believe it's possible... I have yet to encounter ANY driver that could come close to this guy... Absolutely insane and reckless.

Oh yeah, he didn't pop pills... drank coffee by the gallon and probably went though 2 cartons of cigs.

1098 miles running paper and a 75/mph truck. And that was going thru Chicago on a weekend.

That was, maybe, 15 years ago, when I was young and foolish. No way I could, or would, attempt that today.
