First of all as a rule of habit when you merge onto the highway you should not be worried about merging at all til about halfway thru the ramp. Also accelerate slowly and dont try to come onto the highway like a manic.. this is super bad. You should get about halfway and then look in mirror and cautiously come onto the highway AND TAKE THE MERGE LANE TO THE LAST DANG FOOT!!

This is where most drivers go wrong.. They try to merge way before the merge lane ends and this causes backups and does not merge smooth with the traffic.
U ever notice most people do this.

Smart drivers take the merge lane to the last dang foot of it as a rule of habit.

LOL. If I am coming home, I am gassing on it on the ramp and merge across 3 lanes then hit the brakes to make my left hand turn. lol
If I am going the same speed or faster than the traffic, I see no reason to use the last few feet of the ramp anywhere.

I used to put the truck by visual intimidation on the cross bronx. You will be waiting for me. The alternative does not support your life or my freedom. Shrugs.

It was a crazy time back then. They had in my lifetime rebuilt it to make it safer.

Fairly bad advice there. Try and match speed as best as one can and get over as early as possible. If you wait until the last second what happens when a 4wheeler takes the lane you are trying for? It's hit the wall or hit the four wheeler as you left no room the even brake.

I agree. Own the lane as early as possible.

If merging into slow or stop and go turn on your turn signal and pace the lane you want to merge into. Even in LA there are 4 wheelers that hang back to build your space IF you aren't rushing to the end of the merge like a Richard. Be polite and it returns back to you.

do you mean other rigs or 4 wheelers?

the biggest problem I see with 4 wheelers is that they don't speed up until after they merge, which is dangerous if the acceleration would have gotten them into the clear, as opposed to forcing a 62 MPH rig to either slow down, change lanes, or stay the course

when all the 4 wheeler had to do was give it a little gas. then the drama passes and they speed up to 75...

have you driven on the 405 or US 101 in LA. that bs you are preaching will last about .002 sec. i would rather people hit 90mph going down the ramp as they are looking to merge over.

The#1 reason for traffic jams beside bottlenecks, and even in bottlenecks, is people don't know how to merge,. Yield means gas on it, then hit the brake, lol. As I'm coming down the ramp I keep my speed moderate, not too slow to hold anyone up and not too fast to not be able to stop. If I'm clear or someone gives me a break, hammer down, if I'm not, keep my speed or brake till I am, best you can do.
