I like Delvac One (5w40 synthetic). Is synthetic oil better, and why? Many, many, many conversations about this on this site, and all across the interweb. Happy hunting.

I am rather partial to Schaeffer Oil. They have been making oils and lubes longer than anyone in N. America... since 1839. They developed the lubes for the Apache attack helicopter among other things. Big military supplier. They have some very good synthetics and blends. The price may have changed in the last few weeks, but a 55 drum of 5w40 full synthetic, delivered FREE and with several free oil sample kits included, is around $1118, or roughly $20.32 a gallon. There synthetic blend 15w40, which I have been using and getting fantastic oil sample numbers on, is around $968 for a 55 drum or $17.60 a gallon, again, shipped free of charge to your door with several free oil sample kits included. They do have 30 gallon drums, gallons, and quarts. You need to go thru a rep to get the stuff. I highly recommend my rep, Dan Dykema. He can set you up on a commercial account. His site is http://www.schaefferoilreps.com/dandykema/ and you can get his email and contact phone number there. He can set up anyone, make recommendations, and have lubes shipped free of charge ($375 minimum order) to anywhere in the country. Schaeffer has a lot of good products including gear lubes, grease, and fuel additives also.

Here is some samples on my Detroit 60 for the last three oil changes. See what you think. I was following Detroit's recommendation on 15,000 mile oil changes, but recently dug up a Detroit lube manual that shows that this oil, since it meets the 93K218 Detroit spec, can have a 22,500 mile oil change interval on my DDEC IV 60. The oil I have in there now will go that far before I change and test again. I may continue to extend based on oil samples.

Synthetic resist thermal breakdown better, flow better in cold temps, and usually have better additive packages compared to conventional. You do not have to use a full synthetic to get serious benefits. Synthetic blends are pretty good. The Schaeffer 7000 15w40 blend I use has 25% Group IV PAO synthetic base stock combined with Group II+ base stock, which is only one step below a Group III synthetic base stock. A good well rounded package that has the very same add pack as their full synthetic, but roughly $3 a gallon cheaper.
