    He was worried about the temperature and the auto function comes on at a higher temp than he is used to.

    NEVER diconnect the fan switch If the auto fan sensing should ever quit/fail, you will have to run the manual been there done that,,, almost burnt and engine over it.

    And switching to manual when you see a climb coming up that will or can over heat you is a small advantage buying you a little more time to climb before over heating allthough its best just to be patient gear down and dont push it.

    the only time he should worry about the fan switch in the mtn's is on the downhill when loaded. Turn it on with his jakes and he'll have less use for his foot brakes. When I used to drive for the McD's distributor, all their Pete's had manual fan switches, the guy who trained me told me to use the fan with the jake and I'd use less of the foot brakes. He was right, too bad my Mack doesn't have that option.
