So heres a question for all the folk down in Texas.
I'm getting ready to move down to San Antonio.
My cousin down their has been telling me about the oil boom.
So I have been looking at getting into driving for the oil field.
He told me a bunch of his buddies went to the truck driving school down their and are driving for the oil fields now.
Question: I have been looking at doing a school with roadmaster or Sage but am kinda concerned about all jobs looking for at least 6 months of exp.?
Don't want to spend the 5 or 6k and not get a job afterwards.
I do have steady work exp not a job jumper. Was a welder for General Dynamics (Navy Ship work) for 7 years and after 4 years of management. Held Top Secret clearance.
Any advice for someone looking to get into the oil field?
Thank
Moving down to San Antonio with the family

Take your welding experience to them. My Son in-law took a job in Texas as a welder for a year and is raking it in.

There are a few who hire new drivers but will want you to run through their specialized intensive training program which would be the shortest route to a solo position. Schneider is one but it seems like there are 1 or 2 more. If you have a good work ethic and working background and with your welding experience and making some in person visits in the oil patch S and east of San Antonio, someone will take you on and maybe making better or as good money as the truck drivers. There's lot's of ways to make decent money in the oil patch if you're motivated.

Might end up doing that!!! Wanted to get some more stuff on my resume! Make myself more marketable!! Can't weld till you 65 but driving....

im down here in san antonio as well, i just moved here. im in the process of going to the swift school soon, but before i applied for swift i actually applied to schneider for one of their oilfield trucking jobs...i actually got accepted for it because i have 11 years experience as a military trucker, and they were going to put me through a military veterans program where i would have a mentor and what not because i had no oil field or commercial experience...if you are ex military or reserve or gaurd you can apply to them through a military veterans program if not, im sure they would possibly have a mentorship programs as well that you could get into.

Listen to the previous reply. Use your welding to get in the door and build other skills from there. Why spend $5000 learning to drive a truck when you already have a great and marketable skill. Unless you just really have some insane burning desire to learn how to drive a truck (that's kinda my story) just get on welding. You'll learn other stuff along the way. Disclaimer - I don't work in the oil industry but do live down around the area and frequently travel through the Boom Towns and know people in the business.

FFE also has oil field tankers in Texas & is now expanding.
Schneider & FFE both hire new CDL grads. -
