I recently purchased a second truck. A very large wholesaler is willing to give me work. They want me to submit a proposal to them. All my work for the first truck come through a broker so I have absolutely no idea how to prepare this proposal. Can someone help me with this?

    Thanks

Start out at 1st base. What their credit rating is, and check the business and banking references that you should ask for.
You need to know what the companies equipment requirements are. Projected number of loads per week, if you have the capability to drop and trailer and let them load it.
You need to find out the travel lanes, hours of loading unloading, if there are any lumper fees, tarp fees, who pays the permits if it's an over-sized load, if so who pays them.
Detention time should also be talked about and agreed upon.
Payment terms, invoice submission, documentation requirements, fuel surcharges etc to name a few things that you need to know before you can submit a proposal.

    Thanks NightWind.
Is there a publication or software out there that can walk someone like me through the process (a kind of "Starting a trucking business 101")? As stated before, I am currently working through a Broker but want to branch out on my own. I understand and accept that I will make mistakes but consider that a part of the learning process if I want to exclude Brokers.

there are three young ladies at OOIDA that help people get on their feet with such issues...

if a member the service takes a few hours over the phone but I reccomend stopping in their office (blue springs missouri (kansas city area)).

Standard contracts do not need to be fancy or in"legaleaze". but they do need to be clear and free of grey areas that could over commit your resources or allow someone to loophole you into the poorhouse.

There's a lot of ways to learn it, some by posting here and some by doing serious research. I could tell you how I did it but I'd get kicked off because the posting would be several hundred pages long :biggrin_25521:. I'm working on my book, hopefully to have it done some time in Jan 2008.
No I'm NOT promoting it here nor will I when it's done. In fact it'll probably never be published as I don't think there is that big of a demand for it. A I'm not saying that it's the best source for information it's just what I did and how I did it as well as some things that you DON'T want to do that I did. I only post here to HELP people, I'm no expert never will be. I just know how I did it.
If you could maybe tell me what you do know then I could help more which I will be very happy to do as will all the other members of this board, after all that's the whole purpose of the board. :biggrin_25519:

    Thanks gain Nightwind

I smiled as I read your "If you could maybe tell me what you do know .....". Unlike the information you are putting together, the total sum of my knowledge can be expressed in one sentence:biggrin_25523:

Both my wife and I drove Garbage trucks for several years. We decided the bst business to go into was trucking so we up and bought a Freightliner with a 40ft Reefer. The guy we bought the rig from put us in touch with the broker he used for over 15 years. That arrangement turned out well for us because we are kept busy. The rest you know as far as us buying another truck.

That's it my friend. Our story is nowhere as interesting I feel sure, as many of the seasoned truckers out there. All I can say is that we are making a decent living and loving it. Again, we want to avoid as many mistakes as possible so any help from you and others on this forum will be highly appreciated.

BTW, I spoke with Larry Green at OOIDA. Very nice guy. RU a member?

    Thanks again and stay blessed

    Hey there
Sorry I just didn't know any other way to ask, glad you took it the way I meant it. Ha you know more than I did when I started. My uncle trained me 3 weeks and kicked me down the road and the rest well that's history.

Well I don't know many details of what you need in the proposal, like where you'd be hauling to and from etc. I could I guess write a generic proposal and you could fill in the blanks if that will help at all. Let me know.

    Hello there again Nightwind

    Thanks for offering to help.

Your brief description of how you got started in the business made me smile. Hopefully I will one day be abe to use my experiences to help the same way you are helping me.

OK here is 411 on where I am with this deal.

The cargo is vegetables. I will be picking up in Pompano Beach, FL three times a week, (Mon, Wed & Fri). Pick up time will be determined by shipper with two days advance notice. Primary destinations will be Naples, Fort Myers, Tampa and Orlando. On some occasions I will be asked to transport loads to Boston and New Jersey.

Maybe I need more info but that's all I have.

    Thanks again and stay blessed

BTW, I have cargo and liability insurance.

    Hey there!
It was an experience that I will never forget I can tell you that! For the first year I wouldn't talk to anyone in person or on the CB which was whole new ball game for me. Keep in mind I'd never been in a big truck, much less one with two sticks. I just listened, and watched everyone never crossed a scale and was terrified of truck-stops. My how things have changed ROFLMBO. I"m sure that some wished I didn't talk like back then.
I'll make a generic proposal and post it here. You gave me enough information to get you started and that's the purpose. Should post it later today as I have some already made up. They will work in most text editing programs, word, word pad etc. All you'll need to do is copy cut and paste into what ever program you'll be using to edit it. I'll highlight the sections in it so that you know the parts to edit with the information that needs to be in it to look professional. After all we have too look like we know what we are doing. Never let em see you sweat! :biggrin_25520:
