Hello. I understand that going to a lower viscosity grade may help in improving the fuel economy. This is already happening in the passenger car arena. I am using 15W-40 API CJ-4 oil now and I am thinking of going to a lower viscosity like a 10W-30 or 5W-30 and sticking it through all year around.

Any one there has any experience with using these lower viscosity oil in terms of fuel economy improvement in the field and any issues with durability as in wear etc?

Thanks in advance for your comments!

I know Toyota is going to synthetic 0-30 oil in new cars for economy but I don't have any numbers.

Switching form dino 15W40 to dino 10W30 will only have a slight effect on fuel economy. It mostly helps with cold weather starting and getting the cold oil to circulate faster.

Switching to a 5W40 synthetic will have the biggest effect on fuel economy.... somewhere in the 3-4% range from what I've read.

5w40 synthetic rotella is rated for 15w50 and has all the certifications that you need for class 8 engines. I would switch to 5w40 in a heart beat as long as the oil is rated for diesel truck use (has the zink in it). biggest thing is you oil pressure is going to drop a couple psi but shouldnt be a big deal.

Hi I am actually trying to find out the pro and cons in moving to a lighter visgrade oil for my ISX. It's class 8. Am using 15w40 now. Thinking of moving to 5w30 or 10w30.

    Thanks
