I am moving to Albany NY for a new job and have a few questions for some of you locals or veteran truck drivers

    1. I have a CA CDL and will need to get an NY CDL before being hired. does anyone know if NY state is one of those states that sends you a CDL in the mail or do they print one on the spot. I assume either way ill get a permit and that will more than likely be acceptable for hire. I do have a HAZMAT endorsement.

    2. Do any of you know if I can use a P O box address for an NY CDL license application or do they require a physical address.

    3. Anyone from Albany know if there is a good secure/ for rent lot or nonsecure truck stop to park at for time off. any recommendations are appreciated including maybe walmart locations that allow truck to park overnight or maybe more than a day.

    4. Can anyone recommend a cheap secured lot for my automobile for OTR time on the road.

    ANY information is appreciated

    Thank You

You have 30 days to transfer your cdl once you establish NY residency, they will give you a temp credential to use and mail you your full license. You must have a physical street address in NY, but you can also have a PO Box for mail but must have multiple forms of proof of physical residency like a lease, utility bills, etc.

As for parking in the Albany NY area, it depends on where you are actually going to live, it is a large area. There are a few truck stops and some shopping centers, one I can think of off the top of my head is an old K-Mart on Central Ave at Route 155, several trucks park there. There are many industrial areas with spaces for rent, you will just need to drive around and find one, depending on who you work for they may have a terminal or customer in the area that you can park at.

I haul cars throughout the capital district (that is what the locals call the Albany area), have been for 17 years, there is a lot of trucking business up there and a lot of areas to park, you will find something. Be prepared to have a hard time transferring your license, it may take a a few weeks to get acceptable proof of residency for the dmv. Also coming from California expect a culture shock and some long, cold, and harsh winter weather plus a lot of rude people that always seem to be in a hurry to get nowhere.

    Good luck.

    Thank you birian991219
That lets me know what I need to do, I really appreciate the thoroughness of your answer. Yes culture shock shall be one aspect that honestly i wasn't accounting for except for the weather. It sounds like I need to rent a place first and then get my Utility bills and such for the CDL transfer. Im looking at the capital district or further north like saratoga springs. The craigslist adds for housing however seem to be less expensive in the capital district. I hope I'm using that term correctly. SOOOOOO Im from California and don't say too often but does "Y'all" fly out there :biggrin_25519:

Saratoga Springs is much nicer than the Albany area, there is a nice truck stop just off the Northway (I-87) at exit 16 in Wilton NY that has plenty of parking and is safe. You could park there if you lived in Saratoga Springs, it is only a few miles north of the center of town. Also, I don't know who you plan on working for but there is a large Target distribution center as well as an Ace Hardware DC off the same exit so it would make getting loads home easier if they deliver to either of those two locations.

Thank you once again that encourages me to stay looking in Saratoga Springs. I am leaving out who I am looking to work for as they have a fairly bad reputation but its not one of the huge ones. I have not driven since 2008 and I am looking for OTR flatbed or van really so they have a refresher course.

Wow, that is a huge cultural shock. They measure snow in feet instead of inches. Heating bills are huge! I moved to Chicago for 2 years and it got the best of me. I come running home with my tail between my legs!

The best advice I can give you which I learned the hard way is point that snowblower chute with the wind! Then you won't turn into a snowman. :)

I got stuck outside Rochester one time in 3 feet of snow. It was three days before I got out of there.

Is it a woman or the job?

Hey there CondoCruiser. thank you for the snow blower chute advice. Its sort of my Partner in Montreal that I am trying to move closer to within driving distance yet not hassle with Canadian immigration status yet... So.... that being said Ive just opened myself up for several different topics for people to reply on.

Its my understanding that I cannot work in the US and live in Montreal, so thats out for now ergo why I want to live as close to Monteral as the job will permit. I plan on working for this company to pay my dues again to the OTR world then try to find a company in Canada that will sponsor me, if there exist such a thing.

    ANYWHO...Ill stop there

Hello Numb, I believe I just answered your question in a return reply to CondoCruiser. The new company is hiring in off the I 90 in NY or 50 miles there of. They are also hiring south of the 4 in VT but it looks like on my google searches that there are more truck stops on the NY side

VT is really nice. I haul out of a d.c there. I wish my wife wasn't such a city girl I would leave the Boston area and move there. You would have much better luck for work just outside of Albany
