I just did my company's 1st quarter IFTA taxes, and just for the sake of comparrison, our fleet averaged out to 7.75 MPG on all miles. We have a mix of 1-1.5 ton pickup's. All dodges and fords. Our best truck is 8.3 mpg and out worst was 6.5 mpg. What's everyone else get? Oh yeah, they're pulling 40-50' flats.

I pull a 40ft flat and average 13 to 14mpg with cruise set 4mph over the speed limit. -
Very interesting. We do have one truck in our fleet that averages like 11.5 mpg. He pulls a 36' gooseneck, hauls up to 20k too. What do you suppose is the difference in the drastic MPG difference? I ran some numbers the other day, and a difference of .4 mpg saved $700 in fuel for the quarter.
What sort of freight are you hauling, is it especially short? We run all sorts of different things, so sometimes it's 1' tall and others 10'. Just depends. Definately interested in figuring out what exactly is making the big difference. -
99% of my freight is building materials, it can range from a 3,000lb load up to 15,000lb. the wrost I have gotten was 11.8 with a heavy load and stong headwind for a few hundred miles. Nothing is ever taller than the cab of the truck and I always come back empty. If I had backloads my MPG would be SLIGHTLY lower, probly around 12

Are your drivers selling fuel, or fueling their personal vehicles on the company dime?
-
I wouldnt jump that far out on a limb but the more I think about it something is deffinantly wrong.
What is your elevation?
How much idle time?
Do they drive through alot of mountians?
Ive seen some fords get below 10mpg consistanly but every dodge (cummins of course) I have drove pulling a fairly long flatbed has always gotten WELL over 10mpg. Usually around 13-15
also my dads w900 kenworth gets the same mpg as your worst truck.
thats rediculess! -
Seems logical to me. Only one of several drivers is getting sensible MPG that isn't far off from what people outside the company are seeing. The others are seeing one half to two thirds of what they're supposed to be seeing.
Choices:
Routing - the low mileage guys are assigned to runs with lots of in-town stops and routes through small towns with traffic lights.
Speeding - the low mileage guys are running well above the posted speed limits.
Fuel repurposing - the low mileage drivers are using fuel for things other than making their company truck go down the road. -
fuel repurposing ??????
Excellant choice of words !!!
windsmith Thanks this. -
LOL I think if I did ALL 3 of those I mgiht could get my mileage that low!

My buddy hauls cattle with a 6.7 cummins 6 speed hauling 26k and sees 11mpg. I think somethings wrong.
