I come from a time and place where you WALKED onto a place of business and would be hired just on old fashioned human interaction and intuition by the business owner. Roll ahead 30 years.........sans privacy, your entire life is dissected and personally I think someones credit is NOBODIES business except someone wanting to see if they should extend credit because that makes sense!
I'm not a criminal and have a very good driving record but all this talk about solid work history as a prerequisite to employment may be my death knell for getting hired after I get out of school to get back in a truck after 30 years because guess what?
I odd jobbed and subsistance farmed and subcontracted cabling installs all while having the worst economic steady
work history in all the years I have worked. Prior to 5 years ago I was at a steady job for 12 years but left because of burnout and commuting 200 miles a day ON MY DIME! Sorry to ramble on, does anyone have a thought on the broken gappy work history issue? Really appreciate any input!![]()

I had that same type of problem. For the last 8 years prior to getting back into trucking I ran my own finish carpentry and painting business. I found signed affidavits by three people (not related) that knew I ran my own business is what most folks wanted to see in order to prove I actually worked. Most did not want to see (nor cared about) tax returns, 1099's etc. That worked for the school (C-1 out of Indy), PAM Transport, USA Truck and Swift anyway.
I agree about the credit deal tho. Too often these days your credit is pulled before even being considered for a position. Hell if I had great credit I wouldn't be looking for another job duhhhhh. Majority of the time folks leave because they ain't making enough to survive on. Just my opinion of course.ironhand Thanks this. -
is thier any kind of companies out there that will hire someone with not much of a work history?

Dress nicely, be respectful, have all your work info laid out. Bring your own #### pencil/pen to fill out an application. You will get hired. As that poor Human Resource person is gonna have to interview about 100 mental midgets to get to one hireable person. If you are that "one" type of person, you'll get the job.
Again, forget the big box trucking companies. They hire from the masses that have "just enough" of this and that to get hired. You really don't want to work there anyways.ironhand Thanks this. -
Really good responses and as for big box trucking companies.........NO WAY, someway somehow I plan on getting local even if it''s mediocre pay to get that first solid year.
I'm going to Community collage to get my CDL NOT signing any employment contract OR lease either. -
Hi Ironhand. You and I were in the same boat. I'm also 53 with very little as a work history. It's not that big of an issue I found.
If you do go with a big company, just ask the recruiter how to word your situation and where on the application. And remember, the company gets a big tax break if you were unemployed so it can be a bonus in that way.
Good luck bud.ironhand Thanks this. -
It's not all about being a "good guy".. Your job history, credit score, ect is required for a bunch of reasons.. In todays world of stolen ID's and everything, employers have to be sure who it is they're hireing for one, two, your at the mercy of the insurance companies that insure the companies..
Work history, driving records, criminal history play an important part in insurance.. Your in control of a lot of $$, there's the freight.. sometimes, high value?? Then there's fuel, cash advances for breakdown, tires ect.. If you cross the border into Canada, you can't even be behind on your child support payments, have a drug charge, DWI, or other seemingly little infractions on your record to get into the country.
So, doing these thorough background checks, is now required, as well as credit checks... Even local container companies have HUGE problems with theft.. MILLIONS of $$ in goods are stolen. Whole containers are just swooped in and are gone in seconds! (Inside jobs.. The theives know exactly the steamship line, the container#, the trucking co. that has it , when it is pulled out, and where it is.. <they're watching it..> They pull into the trucking companies yard ignore all the "junk" trailers and go for the $$$ trailer only and are gone)!
In the wake of 9/11 would you want it any other way??? Come on... We need to close these loop holes even in the local areas too.. Or we'll wind up getting some suicide bomber here, with a truck full of somthing presenting us with another 9/11 senerio... -
I`m sure there is a local company that has been around as long as you.Still hiring the "old" way-all you gotta do is find them. You won`t have any trouble getting hired unless the insurance company says no.I`m your age with similar history and when I need a job it usually takes less than an hour to find one. Most of the smaller companies in my area wouldn`t think of hiring someone who wasn`t local and thats probably why they are still small. Most of them will go the extra mile to hire you in spite of all the newer regulations. You won`t have much trouble finding a job.
