Can anyone tell me if they have experience dealing or owning these motors? Also if you do have experence with these motors, could please tell me which ones were less problematic for you? Looking to buy a truck with one of these two motors and would like any input I can get as reliablity. The trucks that I am looking at are 2006 and 2007 Century's. Any feed back will be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Detroit has always been cheaper than 'ole yeller on a dollar cost repair. No brainer there.

Cap cost on the front end way cheaper too. ( on the buy ) And there's nothing wrong with a 500 Detroit either. It's a good pulling engine, it's just not a Cat.

Personally as a buyer I would go Detroit.... but I'm all about money and keeping it put in the bank....not saying that Cat breaks down anymore than Detroit but when overhaul time comes the Detroit will be a lot less expensive part for part.

    My 2 cents......

I have a 2005 w900 with a mxs accert. It's a great engine for drivability , power and torque. It's not an economical engine as far as mpg compared to a Detroit or cummins but having driven all three I would take this over the others any day of the week. It is however a gold plated engine when it comes to the cost of parts and repairs. Though a lot of the cost in a repair is the labour and this can be offset by having a long hood truck as its easier for the mechanic to access the engine most times. But hands down I'm a cat man and bleed yellow so that's were I stand on it!

have driven both type of engines since the 60s. in the old days cat would be the better choice like a 1693ta motor. in todays world the 12.7 detroit is hard to beat. i would dare say that detroit could be the best truck motor ever. i know some cat die hards are going to get there hair up about that statement. but if they want to compare miles driven i am up for that. i agree with chalupa its about the money lots of luck ps the V12 detroit i drove in the 60s got about 2 mpg on a good day

    12 V 71 driver..... sometimes hooked to a 2 box 4x4 in a cab over , double wide KW.

You could make a 16 V 71 by getting 2 8's and bolting them together ( designed that way , yes you can ) and get a 16 V crankshaft.

    Now ! for brute o/o power? best I ever drove? 1979 Pete w / 3408 B -TT ( 600 plus horse ) hooked to a 12-5-13 and 3.90,s What a mule!!!

Detroit S60 - 515 hp - 3.55 rears - cheaper parts, better fuel mileage (by almost .5 mpg) in a 2007 Columbia with no APU

Cat C-15 acert - 475 hp - 3.36 rears - EXPENSIVE to work on but pretty reliable engine wise, crappy fuel mileage, 2008 KW T660 with an APU

I owned both these trucks at the same time, ran similar areas and I'd buy the Detroit powered truck again all day long based on total cost to operate.
