Well the old Detroits fall into the Love 'em or Hate 'em category.
As I've stated, I'm a Love 'em guy. I have a 8v92Ti (Marine twin turbo) in parts in my back yard, and an 16v149 2200hp industrial only 400hrs, four turbos and two superchargers, from a genset in storage. (future mid-engine Peterbilt project.) So if the 71 decides to retire itself I have options. Well one option really:
MORE POWER!!!

I love the sound of them old Detroits but unfortunately due to a condition called OCD I can't stand seeing oil leaks or puddles under my stuff.

First trk. I ever drove had a 238.. Found out they can runback words too...
tsavory, BIGZILLA and Cranky Yankee Thank this. -
Marine versions you choose the rotation, prt and stbd engines run opposite rotation for obvious reasons. Starters are available in rh and lh rotation.

The custom harvester I worked for had a 72 and 73 IH cabover, both with 318's. He warned me to keep the kill handle pulled out until all movement stopped. He said they would run backward if it got fuel and the engine rocked back. I just left the handle out until the next morning.tsavory, passingthru69 and BIGZILLA Thank this.

Face it, they just wanna run! Forwards, backwards, runaway. They aren't that picky.

had an old Stonington dragger like this in 76 had a grey marine
the 2 bunks were either side of the engine
with all the oil leaks on a 30 year old surplus engine
a closed combined bunk/engine room I don't think the Marlboro's are the only reason I can't breathe
tsavory, CaptainDaveG, MJ1657 and 2 others Thank this. -
Good judgement comes from experience!
Unfortunately, experience comes from bad judgement.
The lazy ones are still healthy.tsavory Thanks this.
