My 2015 Dane dry van's air tank has finally sprung a leak. It had rust on it when I bought it since trailer was owned and run up north. I know, rust happens everywhere but not like upper mid west rust. Interestingly, DOT has never said anything about it.

It's a slow leak now but I guess it could totally rupture any minute. I'm pointing myself home tomorrow I think.

Any idea if this is something a trailer shop will have to order or how expensive it is?

In my experience air tanks for trailers are somewhat universal as in there are only so many configurations and more than one manufacturer use the same basic ones. They tend not to be super expensive usually less than $100. Cost of installation by a dealer however is something altogether different.

$100 and a 6 pack, maybe 12 it can be a ##### to get the bolts started without an extra set of hands

get like 5-7 years out of them up here if you run in the salt

So, as luck would have it I have an oddball tank. It's 46" long by 9.5" wide, 7 total ports. Seriously. I called lots of places today and eventually had good luck but it went like this:

First call, GD dealer in my town who has seen my trailer a few times: Don't have it, can't get it. Most tanks are around $100-150 but can't get that one because the manufacturer can't get anyone to work. They have them at the warehouse on trailers but no one to unload the trailers. Because......drumroll.....covid. WTF. $250 if they could get it, might take 3 weeks. Next....

Second, third, fourth call: Sir, that's a really weird size tank. I have one that might fit, wait, what size again? No I don't, sorry.

5th call, a small trailer repair shop about halfway along my route today: Yep, we happen to have one. $96. $113 out the door with 2 plugs and a drain fitting (mine were rusted). Score!!! Not open after 5 so we'll leave it out by the gate for you if you pay over the phone. I did, gladly.

It's on board now but I won't be able to install it til the weekend. For now I'm hoping I don't get inspected.

That pretty much sounds like exactly what I experience any time I need a part for my D16.

Would it be easier to simply fab up a more standard size tank. Hangers would probably be different but air line connections would probably be the same.

    Then again, I pull a tanker. :)

Yes and no. It would not have been hard to fab up brackets and use a standard tank but I found one before I got to that. Also, the one I found was cheaper than I expected or was told I would pay.

There's also this, I hope to only run this trailer another 6 months or so. I shouldn't have to ever replace it again.

I'll admit to laziness. I'm not pulling junk around but I'm not going to do more than is necessary to keep her going a bit longer.
