Playa, have you figured out your average pay per mile including dead head? For all miles?
Would be good to hear what to expect as far as a realstic number. Thx.

Last year from June 12th to December 31st I done $113,426 worth of revenue to the truck. Counting deadhead I done 67,866 miles. So just above $1.66 a mile on all miles.
This number will vary for every operator. If drivers don't understand the value of rate per mile, lowering deadhead, limiting idle, and managing their business out the gate it's possible to struggle here until getting the hang of things. Especially throwing someone who's never did flatbed now they are running a business. That was me, but I was lucky. My best friend works here, I had access to the loadboard six months before came here. I knew where most of the good paying freight is and took notes on who to contact. I still take notes, I follow the trends for every region of the United states and try to keep myself in the busiest areas. It helps most that I have made a good working relationship with the agents who pull near my home. Steady contract freight $2.50-$3 a loaded mile to truck outbound, and made friends with the agent on the other end bringing $2-3 a loaded mile to truck right back. I can't stress building relationships and doing a good job enough. Knowing who to call in the area you'll be in is key. Agents will give you a try when you first start, we have some VERY picky agents that will NOT reload you again if you miss your delivery appointments unless you break down, over sleeping can cost you a lot of money from the hand that feeds you. So doing a good job, not looking like a bum in front of the customers, keeping sensitive products dry, communication are easy ways to do well here right out of the gate. I can say that after building a few relationships it only gets better when they start calling you to see where your at because they prefer their freight on your deck if your nearby.TruckerNerd, 59EX and Dogals right foot Thank this. -

Hey play, I read in earlier posts you were considering buying a pre emissions truck and leasing it on. (California days are done with that)
Do you know if they have an age limit on trucks?
And my cousin is getting his CDL and wants to team, could a team do ok with their setup? -
I would say no to teaming just because of the average length of haul less than 800 miles. No age limits on the trucks.

Wow I'm waiting for any signs of a slow down since for flatbed the winter months are slow. And you have busy just the same I stand corrected. Thanks I enjoy your post keep them coming.

Malone has slowed down in placrs, however Midwest is booming right now. Position yourself where you are needed and you will succeed. Most of my regular shippers are still pushing out $2.50 to the truck or better on 350-500 mile runs I can't wait to be back in the north east soon.

Tennessee seems to be a bad area for me deadheading to Kentucky in the am for a load of crane mats to Iowa $1.72/mile deadhead factored in. I'm staying north of the bluegrass parkway as much as possible after that lots of good freight up in Illinois to Ohio area
TruckerNerd and playamwj12 Thank this.
