Oil is down and the economy isn't doing well. I've had to tighten my business and run in places I don't care to, like California. Less out of route, more back roads to avoid tolls and slowing down when able to. I'm in this to make profit.

I've been working hard to strengthen relationships with the few agents I use, and selling service. Early to pickup, early to final. And a call to agent when empty every time. Keeping the product dry, and not running my business for free. I have two 8 foot and two four foot drop tarps on my deck, neither of which I will use for free or less than $150 for 8 footers. The product will be dry when I arrive, this helps the agents keep me in mind. When I'm on home time my wife is accustomed to my phone ringing but I will only answer for Agents, Not my buddies. When the agents computer shows them or I tell than I am going to be in the area I want to be the first truck they are offering freight touch before hitting the board.

I grew up on the concept of if you want something you've never had, you have to do something you've never done. Adapting business is essential. The beauty of Malone is the guy your upset with is the guy you see in the mirror in the shower, sleeps in your truck at night. Proactive pays here, fleet manager will help you find freight YES but it will be what he needs moved. Not what's best for your business. I spoke to my fleet manager for the first time today in 8 days, that's how I want I prefer it to be.

Empty in California and making my way to Sparks NV to load Friday. 488 mile deadhead 1800 miles loaded going to WI for $3950. $1.72 to truck to get me back to the east coast is a no brainer to make the deadhead. All my regulars out of California told me to take what I could and run. So will reset again and load and deliver money morning. After expenses and fuel I'll be at about a $1200 paycheck next Friday with two days left to work. So to me the deadheading justified itself this time.
