Ok, I'm wanting to go to school and become a truck driver so I can run team with Hubby but have one HUGE problem....

I have a Class A Misdemeanor, assault family violence (thank you sissy) :biggrin_25510: Which the conviction date was January 9, 2008.

I've looked at a website that I KNOW Stevens Transport uses to check backgrounds of folks...and nothing's there. I called the County Clerks office...and lo and behold...I'm listed as a darn criminal. Now, when a background check was done in GA, with the current company I am working for, NOTHING came up, but they only ran GA license.

I need help. Please? Advice? I'm ready to tear my hair out. :biggrin_25516:

It depends if they do a state or fed backround check, With driving I think they would do the fed check.

But Felonies dont always bar you from employment, Now if you robbed a bank or blew up a building, Then that might stop ya dead in ur tracks. Only thing is to ask the company you are trying to work for.

Be honest about what happened, dont give out more information then they ask for but DO NOT try and hide it either!

You will look much better to them by showing that you are human, and can own up to your mistakes, whereas if you lie about it and they find out....

I am sure you can figure how your chances at unemployment will rapidly increase!

    Good Luck

Check on grants available at community colleges with driving programs.A little time consuming but worth it.You may qualify BECAUSE of your record.stranger things have happened.

Depending on the state, to my knowledge a misdemeanor should not hinder your schooling. The thing to do is to find a company that has good team freight. One of my recent former students is now driving for USExpress with her hubby. They are driving the wheels off their truck. As soon as they load and get moving, the next pre-plan is on the trucks computer.
Guage your decision on how much husband/wife time you will need, if you are a 'hot' team, don't plan a lot of down time, the company will hopefully run your toes in the asphalt. Also remember, you will be sonsidered a rooky, and not really a true team until some time after you have proven your ability to run with the big dogs.
Some companies have programs where the spouse completes the training after say the second or third week.
Check the companies that have their own (or contracted with) schools. Good luck and be safe out there, don't worry about a misdemeanor. Oh yes, don't plan on going into Canada with anything on a criminal record, even juvenile offenses have stopped drivers at the border. It looks the same up there as it does down here, besides....they talk funny ehhhh?

List it on your application, there will be no problems. If that particular charge was grounds for denying employment. Over 70% of the current drivers on the road, would lose their job in the morning if the truth was known about them. Domestic violence covers a HUGE swath of "legal" complaints. Simply cussing someone out, and having them call the police...is considerd a violent act in some states.

The only time this particular "crime" would be an issue. Crossing into Canada.

My big thing is "What about a company"? WILL they hire me? I talked to Covenant...I already hear the gasps at the mention of that name, but they stated that since the offense was assault related, I would have to wait 3 YEARS after the offense to be hired at their company. Heartland, where hubby is, WON'T hire me at all, Schneider says HECK NO and CRST, they all but tripped on their teeth to hang up the phone after a big NO. I really need some guidance here as I don't mind shelling out the dough, although grants AND financial aid have been applied for, but I don't want to go through it if I can't be hired on since my hubby and I are ready to be "hot footed" and run the wheels off of the truck. We have no children, have no plans on having children as it would be a miracle of the Big Man Upstairs, and we want to work together. I've ridden on the truck, yes the "seatcover" jokes have all been heard, for MONTHS prior to him being hired on at Heartland, and I LOVE IT. So any suggestions??? Comments and complaints are welcome...just drop your card in the box! Or your message, that is. :biggrin_25525:

You have a misdemeanor not a felony. Most all companies should accept you with a misdemeanor. Go through some of the company web site requirements and you will see. Some companies will even hire with minimal felonies. Good luck!

Sounds to me like they're being a bit more selective, with the economy flooding the market with new drivers.

A misdemeaner is hardly looked at by the majority of companies. Unless they intend to run you into Canada.

Nothing you can do about it will make them hire you. Although I think they may have to reconsider their business model relatively soon, if they hold to that pattern of hiring.
