He is better off getting a job working for someone else. Self employment isn't exactly a "ding" against him, but it could be a hassle to document to the perspective employers satisfaction... It sounds like he is going to have enough explaining to do. -- And actually, he should get two jobs. A job to pay his bills and a second income to save to pay for school.
A lot more job prospects will open up if he has the money to pay for himself to go to a respectable school; and working all those hours will show himself, and perspective employer he can actually work the big hours most drivers work. I have seen more then one person go through the whole exercise of getting a CDL, finding a job, and THEN finding out they couldn't or wouldn't work the big hours.
