This wasnt always the case. Use to be as long as you weren't driving commercially you didn't need a medcard. My dad kept his for years this way.
My CDL expired in 2012, I want to get back into trucking

Wait... So if I decided to leave trucking, I can't keep my CDL if I don't renew my medical, I have to downgrade it?Last edited: Nov 15, 2025 at 2:25 AM

No, you can keep it long as you keep up with your medical.nextgentrucker Thanks this.

Yeah, I meant if I don't renew my medical.

you can switch it over to a regular class A that waves the medical. That means you can’t driver for hire but can still drive just about anything with more than 4 wheels.
I’ve done it in Nevada, and didn’t need a medical.nextgentrucker Thanks this. -

Most states will let you self certify as either "Excepted Interstate or Excepted Intrastate". Either one lets you keep your cdl. I am currently Excepted Interstate. Even though I don't plan on driving again. You just never know.Diesel Dave, wulfman75, Numb and 4 others Thank this.

I've done the same in NC, intra state only, no med card.
probably at 72 I may just let it go, haven't driven in about 5 yrs. lolnextgentrucker and wulfman75 Thank this. -
Noice, you're retired? I'm looking for my exit plan as well lol, after 2 years on the road, I think I've put in enough time to see that trucking is not for me. I'm trying to go back to my old field ( Tech ), hey at least I did better than the industry average by being trying to leave after 2 years instead of 1 LOL!!
